I know Turkens are a love/hate breed, but I'm firmly on the Love side. I have several, and they are among my favorites. My friend and neighbor was setting up his incubator to hatch chicks for sale, and was complaining he didn't have enough eggs to fill it. I asked if he cared what kind of hens the eggs came from (mine are all mixes), and he assured me that anything would be fine. So, I gave him my eggs. Yesterday he told me they had hatched, and his wife said the Turkens had to leave. That they are just too ugly to live.
I was quite dismayed at first, as I had my chicken additions carefully planned. But they have nowhere else to go (sniff). So, they will live here. And be loved. And be the subject of a great guessing game. We know one parent is Naked Necked, but the other could be something quite different, anything from Cochin to Silkie.
So, maybe next year for the others. Debating whether I should cancel my current order. No, that wouldn't be nice. Then THOSE chicks will feel unloved and umwanted.
Where's my hammer? Time to start building....
The Tiny Turkens are Coming!
That's the attitude! - Looking forward to pictures so we can help guess.
Porkpal, The Chicken Calculator is already in use! That will help greatly :). I'm now trying to figure out how we got a blue naked neck with feathered feet, as he describes......
Not that I mind, sounds like the Perfect Chicken to me....
Looks like it might be a my splash Turken/Ameracauna rooster and my Light Brahma hen :)......
How about a blue cochin and a turken? That would work wouldn't it...Hay
"If your neck is cold, put on extra socks?"
LOL I love naked necks.. They are awesome birds and I love the crazy look. ONE more pen won't hurt, right? :)
. Yup. But in this case, the little fuzzy-footed blue is already here, and I don't have any blue Cochins. I was looking for what combinations of the current population could yield such a peep. I haven't gone thru all the combo's yet, but that's the only one so far.
We won't talk about the order for Blue Cochins and Salmon Faverrolles that I'm now supposed to cancel.....
ZZ, you are absolutely correct. But for now, they are here next to me, and I'm afraid they will become too tame to free range, They will need a Palace. Or, in the Transylvania tradition, a Castle.
Oh dear. My hammer is so small....
A blue one with feathered feet? That sounds awesome and a definite keeper to me!
My family is Romanian, so the first Transylvanian Naked Neck I saw, I had to have. Now our turken, "Vlad" is one of the best conversation chickens we have (as in, visiting friends asking "what happened to that chicken?") Do the turkens always have naked necked offspring? We just had a BIG hatch and only 1 baby was born with the naked neck.
Do you have any blue silkies? Does it have the extra toe?
*G* He/she is awesome, they all are. I haven't looked at them that closely yet, I figured I'd let them settle a bit. They're sleeping a great deal, which I hope is okay. I've never had any tis young without a Momma hen. It's hard to keep my hands off, but I will let you know what i see.
My only Silkies are black roosters. My only Turken hens are red, or maybe they're buff. Far as I can telI from the Chicken Calculator (thanks again Porkpal :) any ofspring from them would be black. I need to find out about several dominance issues (genetically, nothing kinky*g*). I also need to look up what color are what in "pure" Transylvania Naked Necks.
this will be fun ;)
