I just wanted to be a doting duck mom for a few minutes and see if there are other crazies out there who love their ducks too much. And when I say too much, let me describe the scene:
I sit, relaxing on my couch in the living room, with Early next to me preening a wing and occasionally watching the screen of my laptop. At the far end of the couch are Baby and Hal, quietly dozing. Preston (human, not duck) is passed out in the recliner. Everyone's a little sleepy after a long day. Do I have a coop?–of course. Have the ducks (4 months old) ever seen the inside . . . ?
Someone might think "Eww, poop!" but no, my little babies are decked out in their diapers. At this point in their lives they actually enjoy their diapers; they seem to understand the diapers / house time link.
Is there a screw loose? Perhaps.
But getting snuggled by ducks is absolutely worth it.
For the love of Ducks
Ducks can be very lovable!
Awww, that pic sure shows how much they love being in the house. I had no idea ducks were loveable, Lucky ducks!
How cute! Sure no one here thinks that is crazy.. :) I for one, think it's great!
I had to come back and look at this picture again. I just love the way the one duck is rubbing it's head on his/her people!
I sure don't think it's strange to love ducks. My chickens are the most spoiled and loved animals you could imagine. When you take the time to love an animal, they will most likely love you back. Just respect their nature. I have posted a picture of my girls cuddling on my son's lap. I love your ducks.
Duck lover here too.
I have 15 Domestic ducks of 5 species and
43 Exotic Ducks of 13 different species with babies of several species hatching soon
Update
Up until a few days ago I didn't know if I had boys or girls . . . I had assumed, because of their behavior, I had 1 definite male (Early Bird, the head-rubber), 1 definite female (Baby, in the foreground), and 1 iffy one (Hal, in the background).
Well . . . my sweet little girl Baby, never nips, never fights, but now has a lovely little curl on the tail. A boy?!
I believe I have 3 boys, as the other's top tail feathers look to be suspiciously turning upward as well.
Friends of ours said I should've named them Huey, Dewey and Louie.
And Elleisn, I used to be a chicken girl--empire champion, in fact, for poultry showmanship--and loved my girls dearly. I'll always remember Muffy, my Golden Lace Polish, that would fall asleep every time during showmanship. She would hang her head all the way down (and look rather dead). I would have to wake her up every now and again to make her look presentable.
Now the chicken coop and pen are just beginning to be used by the ducks for the time they aren't in the house or their favorite place: the pond. I love my ducks and want to protect them as best I can.
To everyone: I'm going to order some electric fencing today so that the pen area is safer while my ducks are enjoying the outdoors. The attached is from my game cam: a lovely little critter I caught on it in the night. If anyone has experience with this or any suggestions, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Today I got a call from my boyfriend as he was on his way to work, saying that he saw a new duck at the local pond by the side of the road. He said it was alone (we keep track of what ducks show up there) and a juvenile. Well . . . I go down there and the poor little girl is completely beat up, looking absolutely awful and obviously malnourished. A local couple coming down to feed the birds said, just as we thought, it's a new addition someone had dumped. I couldn't help myself, I brought her home. I don't think she would've lasted any longer out there, and here, she can get adequate food, water, and shelter. By the way I also ordered the electric fencing for the yard. Right now she's following one of my boys (Early Bird) around and he doesn't know what to think! Every once in a while he turns around and chases her telling her "Leave me alone!" I'm not letting all three boys meet her at the same time--she's traumatized enough. I think it might be worth it to take her down to the vet this week, too.
Anyway, I got worked up enough to write letters to the editor to the local papers that told the little girl's story, and asking locals not to dump their ducks as it is not happily ever after for them.
She's very skittish and never going to be completely comfortable around people, but she seems to have already attached to my ducks. I just couldn't let her suffer like that. I have more than enough room for a duck in need.
Bless your heart and thank you for taking this poor little gal in! I'm kind of betting that she won't be skittish for long. How could she? The nice house, sitting on the couch watching TV with her family?
Thanks for the great photos of the duckies.
I'm a new duck owner and really enjoyed seeing the pics & the stories too!

What a great story Jeannie, and the ducks in the home, well my wife would have my head, but personally I love people with loose screws. I think your a real keeper and love the duck rescue story...P.S. it looks like your boyfriends having a blast with them also...It doesn't get any better...Haystack
Huey, Louie, Dewey, and Daisy Duck!
She's lucky, and bless you for taking care of her!
Yes, thank you from me, too, for saving the little girl duckie! And those are some cute ducks! I don't own ducks yet, I'm just a duck wisher. So I especially like the photos. Thanks for posting them.
I'm glad you guys are enjoying the photos. I asked the web administrator about posting videos and they said it will be coming soon: photos are great, but these guys do some funny splashing stuff on the pond that's worth seeing.
The new little girl is doing so much better! She seems to be in love with Early Bird and follows him everywhere. He's putting up with it but now and again turns on her "Quit following me!" Now that she has time to relax and not fear for her life or worry about getting food, she's preening and playing and looking far better than when I picked her up. She's still undersized, but with how she eats I don't think it will be too long until she's just as big as the boys. Already she's beginning to understand that I'm ok to approach, as the boys waddle right up and talk to me. We've had a few "holding" times (and she bites pretty good!), but she's more agitated with me than fearful.
By the way, both newspapers printed the story and there has been a buzz around town about it. I can only hope that I educated a few people about the issue, and that maybe there were a few less impulse buys on Easter for little ducks.
Yesterday I put up part of my electric fence around the outside pen, which was quite an experience. Now that we've been having more and more sunny days, the ducks have been having a lot of fun rooting around in the grass (getting absolutely filthy), and I want them to be as safe as I can make them when I'm not out there with them. There are a few tree limbs hanging over the fence and I had to stop and reassessed my capabilities when I realized I was thinking of trying out a chainsaw. . . I'll leave that to the experts.
I rehab baby ducks, mostly wild wood ducks...I raise and then release. However, I have had a few domestics. One of them became our only daughter. She also was a house duck...with diapers. You can tell that I kinda like ducks by my DG name. LOL
Thanks for the stories and pix. Very enjoyable!

Welcome back Duckmother we hadn't heard from you lately.
Go to Youtube and type in duck and puppy to watch a 6" high yellow duckling terrorizing a small dog. They have a yelling contest but the duck wins. It's great. Cam
Thanks, porkpal! I have been lurking...
