Looking at all these recipes made me think of something that has stumped my family for years.
My grandma used to make something she called "gretwurst" that was basically ground cooked pork shoulder, oats and cinnamon, formed into patties, and sauteed for breakfast.
I'm trying to document all of her recipes for her children and grandchildren, and want to make sure I'm getting this one right, but unfortunately I don't have this one written in her own hand to know for sure - it's more a "folklore" recipe at this point :)
After some searching, the closest recipe I can find is "goetta" which is like scrapple but with oats instead of cornmeal. And I'm wondering if somebody added the "wurst" for sausage since it has pork, and we've mangled the pronunciation beyond all recognition.
I'm hoping that with all these authentic German dishes, somebody can shed some light on this "mystery food" - what is its rightful name, and how is it spelled/pronounced?
Okay, all you German cooks - I need your help :)
