I purchased two Black Magic EE's from Home Depot which are beginning to sprout and I would like to pot them up to get a head start for when it warms up outside. I'm using approx. 1 gal. size containers.
My questions are:
1. Do I bury the purple sprout slightly or should I let it peek out.
2. One of the EE's had some rot happening at the bottom end so I trimmed it up to clean tissue and then sprinkled with cinnamon powder as was suggested in one of the threads here. I then buried it in the pot. Did I do right or wrong?
I'll post some pics of my project.
Thanks,
Toni
Have ?'s re: potting up my Black Magic EE
Looks good to me. Make sure it gets a lot of sun. The black EE will look more green if they don't get a lot of sun. I love mine :) I have them planted with my mojito, love the combo together :)
Thanks catzgalore, I've got them under lights with my other seedlings so I hope that's good enough for now.

Yep. They like lots of water too. Good luck :)
Here's an update exactly 1 month after planting my Black Magic. The shorter one in the pic is the one I was holding in the original picture. The taller one is the one that was half rotted and had the cinnamon sprinkled on it. I thought for sure it would continue to rot but its bigger than the "healthier" one.
Question: How big can I expect these EE's to get from this standpoint? I will be taking them outside as soon as it warms up enough (if ever). Currently they are under shoplights with all my other annuals.
I have plenty of pots in all sizes to choose from, what would be a good size to keep these in during the summer?
Thanks for all suggestions.
Toni
My EE's now have their first leaf (don't know the proper name) and have outgrown my shoplight setup. I need to lose a shelf and raise the lights so that the EE's can get proper lighting b/c the temps outside are definately not cooperating for tropicals.
These Black Magic are truely beautiful. I'm wondering if the smaller one will catch up with the larger one or if it will just be smaller in general. Any ideas?
Toni
Looks to be Col. Fontanesii
