Moodene's Boo Boo Babies

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

These hatched just this past Friday,3-25. I got them in my fishtank until they feather out abit more..I got 8 babies out of 12 eggs. These are mixed brown egg layers. Their daddy is a Blue Orpington and the moms are Blue Cochins, Blue or Black Orpingtons. I did have a 5 yr Buff Orpington hen who just passed away last week.
Yes you do see one of the chicks wearing paper shoes..it had curled toes and it is now walking alot better...LOL...

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I like that idea even better!! chicky flip flops!!..wondered if it will understand one day why it is wearing them???..

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Lovin 'em! Tooooo sweet and I like the idea of creating a new strain of brown egg layers by crossing! Hopefully you got all girls!

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Me too..lol

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Congrats Nadine on your hatch. They are soooooo cute

(Zone 6b)

Enjoying the pictures Moodene, thanks. So sweet.

(Zone 5b)

How did you make the chickie flip flops, very impressive, and how long will she need to wear them?

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I used a pice of thin cardboard cut like a baseball diamond then taped her feet to them. I uncurled and spread the toes out with my hubby's help..That chick did alot of squawking..lol..she is still wearing one flip flop since the toes still curling..but she can walk ..lol..
They have been moved to a plastic tub now..they got some sunshine Friday and ya should have seen then take a dust bath in this box I had..I laughed so hard..since it was their first time doing it..lol..

(Zone 5b)

Thanks for the flip plop directions, what a great idea!

Isn't it fun to watch them fluff? It just cracks me up!

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Yep, a june bug was the fun part..caught one and threw it in the tub..they had some fun with it.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

ROFL Nadine. That's is to funny to watch tiny chicks rolling in the dirt.

The other day hubbie ran in to tell me something was wrong with my big chicken. He said it was just laying on its side trying to get up but was only slinging dirt. I rolled. I have only had chickens for what 2 1/2 yrs now and he has never seen the rolling in the dirt. it was to funny.

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

I still remember the first time I saw one of my chickens spread out in the sun. It was dead. I knew it. Nothing could look like that and be alive. Of course, then s/he got up and shook, but sometimes I still get a twinge when they start imitating airplane wrecks....

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Cat that's what my hubbie thought and the expression on his face to come in and tell me something was wrong with my new Silver Ameracauna. I was rolling but very glad there wasn't anything wrong

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Well that one little chick that wore flip flop chick shoes isn't growing like the others..even tho it is eating and drinking water..it gets right up there with the bigs one to eat n drink water..lol...none of the other chicks are pecking on it..I know it isnt a bantam..hatched out of a regular brown Orpington egg! mmm..gotta keep eye on this baby..

(Zone 6b)

Maybe all the nutrition is going to the injury.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Strange.. but sometimes something is goin on inside huh? I've seen a chicken that never got much bigger than a robin... (there about) It lived a good life, but finally didn't make it when they were all pretty much grown.

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Both of its feet are normal now..it is just not growing like the others..lol..If it doesn't get any bigger. I will have to cull it. I don't have time to babysit a chicken that is cripple since I work 8 hrs a day. will wait few more days...

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

If it's still eating and no-one is picking on it, why not just let it be? Might surprise you :)

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Well it has been leaning on its side now..I took a look all over its body to see if there was something on it to make it do that. Soon as I touch it..it runs around and then lays on its side when it stops..me think it is just being too lazy to walk to excerise..mmmm..lol..

(Zone 6b)

Me and Cat want to save the chicken. Me and Cat, that isn't proper English is it? Cat and I want to save the chicken.

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Me too..maybe I will make it a walking sling to hold it up..anything is possible..lol

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

I'll just say we both want it to live:). And, now that Moodene's on board (and I secretly suspect she always was), I know all will be done that can be done. Sometimes they're not meant to stay, but sometimes it just takes a little extra care, for a short time. Currently I have a little Barred Cochin hen living in my bathroom, and a Turken hen who spends the night in there as well. People don't understand when I tell them they're of course they're welcome to visit, but that they will be rooming with two chickens and a cat with cancer....
Why do they suddenly find somewhere else they have to be??

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I hear ya..lol..I don't get many people here to visit since I am TOO busy with my animals, plants and my dad coming over to visit all the time..lol

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Okay, this is the baby who is so much smaller than the others who are born all on the same day...see..it does eat..lol..can't figure out why it won't grow up!

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

It practically stays in the feedpan to eat all the time..lol..not sure where it's food is going..it did pooped in front of me one day..nice n firm ..no worms..or anything...this is the one I had to put chicky flip flops on its feet..

I've seen that happen before.. I have no answer as to why...

Richmond, TX

It not only is smaller, it actually looks younger too. I'll be it catches up eventually. Such a cute little fuzzy butt!

(Zone 6b)

Wow it really is smaller. Maybe it's a midget. :)

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

LOL..not sure why the little chicky isn't growing..it does have some wing feathers...still eats n drink n poops..snuggles with the other chicks at nite time..

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Ya know, many bantams had to come from big chickens (and vice versa) at one point, maybe you just have a progenitor of a new breed :)

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Wow , thats what I thought! Its a keeper for sure, tiny tiny tiny! I think it might have a banty mailman for a Daddy! LOL!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

The one I had never did mature, not even close! I wonder if something is missing in the genes or something.. interesting. I had roos that were full size and the "runt" was no bigger than a quail.. still had baby looking wings, etc. It was tuff though!! Hung out with all the big boys (that were his hatchmates) until it died..

You might have one of those... My bet says it doesn't grow to maturity.. :( I know, I know, I'm not being negative.. LOL

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

Fuddlebutt will be the tiny chick's name. Grandson named it..lol...

Richmond, TX

Good name!
