Baby frizzles?

Orlando, FL(Zone 9b)

Anyone ever hatched frizzles? We had 2 roosters, one a RIR and the other a little white frizzle. Sadly, "david bowie" (the frizzle) died a week ago of unknown causes, so I went into the coop immediately and put all the eggs I could find in the broody hen's nest box or in the incubator in hopes of hatching a frizzle (we also have 2 female frizzles, so I like the odds).

So here's the flock, if you're into punnet squares:
2 roosters (a RiR & frizzle

The girls:
2 silkies
2 frizzles
1 Turken
1 Wyandotte
1 red leghorn

We've got a wave of hatchlings, most of them look like RiR/ leghorn crosses, but wanted to see if the frizzle doesn't show for a while. Also have a few that look like mottled silkies (white and black) which I can't imagine coming from the RiR.

Any thoughts out there in chicken land?

I'm sorry for your loss.. hopefully you will have some of his babiez to carry on. :)

All I know is that you are not suppose to cross frizzle to frizzle.. Makes for babiez with no feathers I think... or deformed? I can't remember..

I love how wildly your flock is put together! LOL My kind of flock for sure! Best of luck to ya.

that one looks like it was part turken!! What a neat chick. I'll crawl in the coop & post pictures after my camera charges. All our frizzles had/have the "silkie toe" (one more toe than they should) and at least two of the babies have it too, so they're either silkies or frizzles.

she wolfie, looks like the one in the back of your picture has an extra toe too?

Yay!

Apparently you all are way ahead of me about chickens. What is a RIR and what is a frizzle?

Texasrockgarden, be careful. Asking things like that can send you quickly down the slippery slope into Chicken Addiction...

Vn,
no there is no extra toe its probly standing on a wrinkle in the fabric.I just started trying to add frizzle to my line so im just learing.

Gridley, IL

Yeah ZZ, I read that about the best frizzle. Thats really interesting how you can make any breed frizzle within a few generations. Im going to set up pens to use with frizzle roos. Im have loads of millie fluer bantam cochin comming to im going to try to frizzle some of them by next year.

That lil Showgirl Frizzle I had was so funny.. I'd like a full pen of those.. Haystack is so right about me.. I love so many.. There is no way I could have all of the breeds I want!

What do you guys think of sizzles? I have one pair That came out of my Cochin breeding pen last year when i was baby sitting a silkie for a friend. I think they are adorible.

vnickdd what are the colors of your hens? It might help to figure out the parentage of the hatch.

Orlando, FL(Zone 9b)

2 silkies - 1 red and 1 grey
2 frizzles - 1 mottled white and 1 black
1 Turken - red
1 Wyandotte - salt & pepper
1 red leghorn
I forgot the Arucana

and then there is my oldest hen, "Oma Chicken" - I have no idea what she is. Here's a pic (she's had her head picked on a bit by the roo):

Unfortunately several of your hens will have the same color chicks regardless of which rooster sires them. The grey (blue?) hen will produce either blue or black offspring from either a white or red rooster. The mottled white (splash?) hen will have blue chicks from either and the black hen will have blacks. Not very helpful am I? I don't know what color you call salt and pepper and I may have interpreted some of the others wrong. The red x red breeding will produce more reds, while red crossed to white would show some black patterning that will probably appear later. I guess it's a matter of wait and see.

Good luck!

Porkpal, is there a "chart" of some sort that tells what color X what color produces what? Or is this just something you learn over time? I have a huge Cochin roo that appears to be lemon blue, and would like some idea of what color his babies will be. He has lots of hens of different sorts :)
It really isn't important, just a curiousity. He has chicks due next week.
I also have some Ameracauna x Black Jersey Giant chicks to be, and I'm curious there, as well.
I'm also interested in what kind of dominance is at work in combs, if anyone knows?
Would help in figuring out who's who (or rather, what).

You need the Chicken Calculator! http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Thanks Porkpal. Yes, that's the one I've seen before, and couldn't find again. I'm going to try it, and then try to find Chicken Genetics for Dummies, or The Idiot's Guide to Chicken Colors. I used to be pretty good with the little boxes:)

The scariest thing about that site is that there's an Advanced version....

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Okay, now I've got it working :). This is going to be fun.....

I now have frizzle galore! I have both standard and bantam cochin frizzles I think they are darling. I cant wait until they are old enough to tell the sexes so i can set them up properly. This is gonna be fun!!!!

Oh ZZ's, it seems to me I have lost my best friend to the wrong crowd. Frizzles, Sizziles, Frazzles, n Sazzales. Good Lord enough already. I'm still trying to figure out how to get these girls to quit taking those sabaticals called henopause...I need fertile eggs...Hay
