I'm in zone 5 in NW CT and I just received my order of 3 dwarf apple trees. The invoice says "rush" which I did not signify and I cannot plant them out until the end of next month. They are dormant now and I wish to keep them that way until I can get them planted. What do I do to keep them dormant and safe during the interim from now until then. Right now, I have them in my cool cellar, temp. around 50, still wrapped in the plastic they came packed in. I emailed the nursery and haven't heard anything back. Can anyone give me advice here?
I need advice re apple trees
I would put them in pots and get them out of that plastic fairly soon, mine came like that and I had to leave them in there a couple extra days and was worried about them. I don't know how to keep something dormant, that depends on temperature, I would think. Some people put their apples in pots for a year before they plant them out. I planted mine immediately.
I don't know if this helps any or not.
If they are bare root you could do like the retail nurseries when they receive a shipment they put the roots into a slightly damp sand or some other very loose medium. It isn't exactaly planting them but it does keep the roots from getting dessicated until they are sold. If they are bare root do not keep them in the plastic. If there is a complete root ball surrounding the roots they could be stored for awhile in the plastic. I don't know how you can keep them dormant and why bother. Don
Thank you for the responses. What I'll do is place the roots in a large bucket of damp peat, which I have plenty of, for now. I just sent Henry Fields a second email asking for advice. . .haven't heard anything from the first I sent a few days ago. I have been ordering from them for years and have always been very satisfied with their stock and services but this is unacceptable. The invoice was marked "rush" which I did not indicate when I ordered the trees.
