Amazing

(Zone 5b)

For the last week I've been talking to the eggs in the incubator every couple of hours. I always use the same tone of voice that I use with my other chickens and say "Hi Peeps, Hi Peep Girls." Well, tonight as soon as I started to talk to them - several answered!!! I couldn't believe it, so I kept talking and they answered again and again. There aren't any pips yet but tomorrow is hatch day. I'm just so amazed that they talked back! It's probably normal for them to do that, but I like to think they were responding to my voice LOL I'll probably stay up most of the night talking to them LOL, it's sooooo cool! They'll be going to their new home on Saturday.

Oh, the 20 WM chicks were delivered today. All are healthy, eating, drinking, pooing like mini horses and ohhhhh my are they ever fuzzy and cute!!!! They'll be leaving on Friday.

They're just saying "HI, MOMMA!" :-D Since you are the only voice they've heard, they are going to come out of the eggs and you're going to be IT. :)

One is fully hatched and is about half dried, yay! I can only see one other that has pipped. I'm very surprised to have that chick hatch. There were some big calcium spots on the egg that made it hard to turn, so I filed them off.
Have to go so I can talk to and stare at them LOL

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

love listening to them talk from inside the shells. When I hear them that when I know they are fixing to stat pipping

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

That is so sweet! I do the same thing.. I love it when they come running when they hear me.. (when they can run) even when they are first hatched, and they hear my voice.. to look up at me just melts my heart. :) I'm so happy for you Annie!

This statement is not about chickens. When I was pregnant with my first daughter, the night before she was born I heard her cry. I talked to her and rubbed my stomach and she went back to sleep.

(Zone 5b)

The wait is agonizing. 7 hatched, one has a pip since this morning and little to no progress but she peeps when I talk to her. Another egg rolls around a lot and I can hear peeping but no pip yet. Is there any hope more will hatch? The first 6 all hatched within a couple hours this morning, then the little guy early afternoon with the crooked neck - nothing since. I'm getting worried but am keeping my hands out of the incubator. You have no idea how hard that is! When I talk to the first 7 that were born (they are in the brooder) they look at me, one cocks her head and watches me. I so love this! Oh, and the poly vi sol drops without iron worked like a charm for his neck. I just want to watch them every second of the day LOL

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

A pipped egg can take up to 24 hours to hatch. It is terribly hard to wait.. I know..

Isn't that the cutest thing ever? (when they look at you) I just die over that.. even still..

I had a chick emergency last night with a cold chick that was lifeless... when he "came to" and looked at me then snuggled in my hand.. I just get weak.. He is not used to being held, but he sure was glad to be last night! I was able to put him back with mom and lock em up so they can't get cold.

(Zone 5b)

I'm so glad your chick is ok!! He's lucky to have two moms!

If it takes up to 24 hrs then I won't worry so much, or any less either LOL.

YES, I love when they look at me and talk. I melt too and then give them treats, they have me pretty well trained.

(Zone 5b)

Miss Mouth finally finished her pip and zip and I got to see it just now!! Here she is, not happy to be alone and she isn't quite unless I talk to her. Here she is telling her sister to hurry the heck up, then she told the sister on the other side to hurry up too. You can see marks from my face on the incubator lid from talking to them LOL

Sorry, had to throw this one in - Charlotte with her babies on their daily outing. She's teaching them all about proper sand fluffing.

They stay out for about an hour and when she thinks they've had enough she takes them back in the garage. I pick them up and put them back in the pen.

Oh good.. you have at least one in there.. it helps encourage the others to come out.. :)

I love Charlotte!

(Zone 5b)

10 have hatched so far. I'm going to bed and hope to wake up to a few more chicks in the incubator. 8 unhatched, there are no pips or sound when I hold them to my ear.

Yes, I love Charlotte too!!! She really loves her babies adn doesn't try to kill me like Goat did LOL

(Zone 6b)

So happy for you AnnieB. Congrats.

Alfred Station, NY(Zone 5b)

Very cute!

(Zone 5b)

A total of 14 out of 18 shipped eggs hatched! The others don't have pips and haven't moved but I'm keeping them in there today just in case. I think that is a pretty good hatch rate for shipped eggs, and with me messing with the incubator so often. I love this incubator, so glad you recommended it! I'm in chickie heaven today until their new momma comes to pick them up.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

That is really good numbers Annie! I knew you'd have a good hatch.. I'm so happy for you! You are such a great chickie mommy.. :)

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

wow Annie that is fantastic for shipped eggs

(Zone 5b)

TWO MORE PIPS!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL That is fantastic Annie!! Keep talkin to em!! :)

Your going to have all kinds of babies! My silkie is sitting on eggs,dh went out this morning to look at them and he came in and said I thought you said Jadee is sitting on 6 eggs and I said ya she is ,he said she got up when he opened the door and she has 10 under her, either she is still laying or the others are laying near her and she is taking them and putting them under her.Dumb me never thought to mark the eggs now I don`t know which is which so I left them all there and marked the 10 in case some more get added.Should have babies the 10th of next month. These extras will be four or five days behindmI wonder if she will stay on the nest long enough to hatch these late commers?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

My last 2 hatches were that way Green, but once mom has babiez, she usually only sets another day or so.. if that.. there's always hope though!

(Zone 5b)

16 out of 18 eggs hatched! The last two will stay in the incubator until late tomorrow, just in case. I'm thrilled to be their temp mommy, I swear they know my voice. None of then run from my hands and all look at me when I talk to them. It's going to be very hard to part with them this weekend. I just love the gal who is taking them, she will give them an excellent home and they'll be part of her breeding program if they mature nicely. I was lucky, had a good incubator and the very best support in the world on this forum, THANK YOU!!!!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

That is an amazing hatch!! I am so happy for you Annie.. That is just awesome. :)

(Zone 5b)

Thanks! I'm just having the best time with them! All the chicks will leave tomorrow night so I'm trying to get enough of a chick fix to last for a while.

(Zone 6b)

They are precious and I'm glad are going to a good home. When you said WM does that mean wheaten marans?

Ferndale, WA

Great hatch Annie: Congratulations...Hay

Gridley, IL

I also was wondering what color marans they are. I got some eggs from a gal who only has black copper marans and somehow i have one white chick.

I bought partridge silkie eggs a few years ago, and out popped a yellow chick. SURPRISE. I asked the seller in email, and he said, "Oh what have I done?" I didn't mind though. He's a very pretty white silkie rooster, not show quality but has a very nice clean white color. Wish he had a bigger crest. He is one I really don't need, and he's fairly aggressive, even to me. He has flogged me a few times recently. I did the Haystack maneuver on him, and he's calmed down.

He's always been a spunky guy. His name is Alvin, and the partridges are Simon and Theodore. The more I look at those partridges the more I like them. Again, though, I wish they had bigger crests.

(Zone 5b)

She_Wolfie, the wheaton marans are born yellow, the BCM are born black with some some very small patches of white that eventually go away. The yellow could be a mix of wheaton to Blue wheaton Marans, the hatched offspring of that mating for that color is 50/50. As to the red one I have no idea, but she sure is a cutie and I love how feathered their little legs are already!
16 out of 18 seems like a very high, and lucky, hatch rate for shipped eggs. The eggs came in a chunk of soft foam with holes cut out for each egg, and then a top layer of foam, like a lid. I think the remaining eggs aren't going to hatch, but, I'll leave them in until tonight. They're all leaving tonight, bitter/sweet. It's been so fun but I have so much going on right now. I'm loaning the incubator to a friend to use so I won't accidentally buy some hatching eggs LOL

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Oh, those accidents are dangerous.....

(Zone 5b)

Yes, I need to stop drooling over eggs on byc and ebay! The incubator is out of the house now so it's safe, well, sort of LOL The last two eggs didn't hatch so I opened them up, I don't think they were fertile, nothing growing, bloody or black in them. This was a great experience and I'm so thankful for all your help!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

So you had a perfect hatch! If it was fertile, it hatched! That is 100% cause there "ain't no way them two was gonna hatch" LOL

There is plenty of time.. When you get it back and start having withdrawls.. well, ebay is always there! :)
