My Black and Blue Salvia has a lot of 2 or 3-inch shoots spread about it and I thought I could just dig them up and transplant. (See right side of photo.) But there is almost no root system on these little shoots and they wilt like cooked spinach within a couple of minutes.
How do you do this?
Thanks.
Black and Blue Salvia - How to divide?
There is a stolon running from the mother plant to new growth. I like to take as much as the stolon as I can. I visualize where that stolon is, cut with a spade next to mother and take up a large root ball and backfill with dirt. Try not to breakup the rootball holding the offspring. Hope that makes sense. Wilting is normal, keep it well watered even if looks dead, it can still produce more shoots from the stolon.
This is only saliva I can't seem to root, other can, it's just me.lol I've developed a knack for dividing. It's such a lovely plant even if it encourages humming birds to fight :0)
Thanks. When the first division wilted so much, I went ahead and put it in the ground and watered with root stimulator. Was pretty discouraged looking at it all afternoon but then right before dark when it was cooling off, it stood up just like it was growing there forever !! So hope it will live.
I received the start of this plant at the DG round up in Arlington fall of 2009 and really like it, so knew somebody had to know how to get these divisions to live.
Oh Glenna, there is definately a root system! http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/265507/
I am not as knowledgable as Lynea on what you call them...LOL! But if you take a shovel under the leaves of the main plant and dig out from there you should be able to capture the root system. They are very hard, remind me of black walnuts.
Also, even if they look wilted, put them in very moist soil and set in the shade for a couple days.

My BB didn't come back this spring. I planted it last fall.

Cheryl, it must have sensed your ambivalence!
LOL! I bet that was it! I wouldn't count it out yet, but I have more....
Mine hasn't come back either. I had 2 in the backyard and neither came back. I didn't have them in an ideal location (too shady), but it did well anyway.
A very sensitive plant I am sure LOL. It was pretty so I might try it again.

Mine was only 3inches tall last week. I have it in three spots shade and sun...so keep watching.
this is the 3rd year for mine and its coming up like gangbusters even with the cold weather we had.. mines in full sun and does well.. Ill probably have some cuttings at the ET Roundup if anyones interested
Glad to report that the division I dug up on the 22nd is doing very well now. Standing tall.
I've got one that I put in a glass of root stimulator water indoors and it was horribly wilted at first but it also has perked up and I'm going to see how it does in soil in a couple of days.
If these do well, I'll start several in pots for Arlington RU.
Glenna
Congrats, Glenna. Lulu gave you good advice on how to transplant it (I've done it this way with great success). I have Garanitica in both full sun and shade/afternoon sun, and they're all up and going strong. Once it gets over it's "transplant pout" it usually takes right off. All plants should be so easy! :-)

Great!
We'll see how "great" it does! LOL
