the promised goat w/cart photo

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

I promised I'd post this photo as soon as I figured out the scanner. And here it is. DH didn't really take much interest in my old family photos but he helped figure out the laptop scan with me (I have Vista). Now he's looking for goat carts in case we someday have grandkids! I've also posted the promised photo of my grandmother's pink rose hedge over on the rose forum.

Oh, I LOVE it, Terri!!!
I don't think I've ever seen such an unusual harness.
I haven't let dh off the hook for my cart!

What does 'pekin-30' mean?

We all come from Pekin IL. I'm assuming 30 means 1930. That would be about the right year for her to be that size/age. I think this was a professional photo. You know, those photographers who went from door to door to take photos of folk's kids on ponies--this this was a goat cart. I'm not sure, though as my dad says he thinks he remembers that goat. He was a number of years younger than this aunt.

That is one of the cutest pic's I have ever seen. I so love this pic. I would consider this pic as a treasure. I think if it were mine I would have an artist do a painting of it and print lithographs. Terri did you know Greenhouse_gal is a wonderful Artist. I would love to see a painting of this done by her...Haystack...

Ahh, that makes sense, Terri. Some of the goat cart photos I've collected have names and places on the sides.

My mother has most of our old pony photos, I love those too. A few years ago I got the bright idea of recreating them. We gave our youngest son a pony party. I bought little western hats and badges, loads of black and white film to get the vintage effect. I was going to send out the photos of the kids as a 'thank you'.

I told the gal we rented the ponies from my idea. Somehow she missed the point or had never seen a vintage pony pic. When the ponies arrived off the trailer they were dolled up in pink streamers, barrettes and lots of beads. They didn't look like cow ponies, more Barbie ponies. My son was too young to care, we still get a good laugh out of that.

Here are some of the pics I have on my desktop.

Very cool, cocoa_lulu. Most of those goat carts are very unique. Which might hold with my dad's memory that the goat in my photo was a pet and he believes either my grandfather or some other member of the family made the cart for a parade. I love looking at the different fashions of the day in those old photos you have. I especially like the first photo posted, which also shows an English bulldog. Although I love those dogs, the breeding has really changed for the EB's and I like the older model better. I hope the breeders find some of those old photos and start "turning back the clock". That would be great. And those goats are a treat to look at, too! What a fun collection! Thank you for sharing.

Hay, what a nice complement. My aunt was a lovely woman and would have loved to hear how you enjoyed her picture. The fun part about finding those old photos in her basement when Dad and I were doing some final cleaning was that we discovered that my older boy looked exactly like my aunt when they were both the same age. No one had ever noticed that before.

I do have a special frame for this photo--one found stashed away in that same basement, still in the original box and never used. So the photo will go on the mantle piece or somewhere else equally prominent. I keep moving is around in my mind!

Terri, I love these photos also. You mentioned something I think is a wonderful idea. What if you started a thread called (Shades of the past) That would be so much fun and who knows what would be contributed. As new members become involved it could become a perpetual thing. The possibilities this could spawn would be a blast. I love old pictures...Hay P.S. Shades of the past was just an idea, use whatever name you like...LOL...Hay

Ok, I'll quit now, but those are really just the cutest! Never had seen those before. The goats must have been very well trained. I have always heard the goats are very smart, but they are also destructive and will get on your car etc. These goats look very well behaved. You know they must have been to trust them with the children like that.

That last goat with the curly hair is awesome! And the little boy looks ornery enough to just take off with the goat for a round the block tour. LOL! Thanks for the links.

Yes he is a lovely goat. Wonder what kind he is. Just look at those horns.

Awesome, LfJ. I had to add those to my desktop too ;0)
Did you look around on Shorpy site? I love that site and will shamefully admit I've spent hours looking through the old photos. My favorite are the colorized ones from the Library of Congress. So surreal to see color on images from so far back.

Makes me want to buy a goat.
