I have an older Kristen sweet cherry that needs a pollinator.
I would like something that flowers sooner rather than later and is self-fertile.
Needs to survive in northern Illinois though it need not be a heavy producer.
My research leads me to thinking of Lapins on Gisela 5 rootstock or Zaiger dwarf rootstock.
Most of what I have read was written by west coast growers.
Any comments on experience with varieties and rootstocks for Zone 5a( northern Illinois) and somewhat clay soil would be appreciated.
If another rootstock is suggested, then also need recommended source.
