I bought this today at MG at the Native Plant lecture. I see in the plant files that Josephine had it in 2006. Any advice in terms of how xeriscapable it is and how much sun it can really tolerate? It sounds wonderful but would love some real life advice.

I don't know anything about it but its pretty. Did you check NPIN? Let me know how it does, I would like a fern that can take our heat and sun.

Yes I have that and it grows well. Do you want some?

Thank you Anna, maybe we can trade at the swap, I will keep it in mind.

Anna, this Cheilanthes fern is native to our Big Bend. It's one of the ferns Casa Flora offered us when we toured last year. I planted mine under the kitchen window and forgot it. It received no water, except what back splashed off the roof that wasn't captured by the gutters. It survived our extremely cold winter freezes without mulch coverage. I noticed that it was still hanging in and had new growth. Mine gets morning sun where I planted it. We were told it would take more sun, but to keep the roots shaded. I like it's grayish coloring as a contrast of the other bright greens in the garden.

Thanks Sandy. It sounds tough! Would you know if it spreads by rhizomes? Plantfiles says it doesn't...but always good to double check.

My tag said it was a "creeper".... I think we planted a lot of these in the fern bed at Zilker.. I don't remember seeing them when I was there a couple of weeks ago. We lost quite a few ferns to the prolonged freeze...and not being properly watered in late summer. I'll have to check next week. We're still assessing what survived and returned. I'm fairly sure this one is a keeper, tho!

I put in a place that if it spreads it will be ok with me. It has to compete with frogfruit, coralberry and columbine. If you remember to check, I will be interested.
