Cherry of the Rio Grande

Chichester, NH(Zone 5b)

I posted this in the Southwest Gardening by mistake.

Eugenia aggregata.

I've had this plant in a large pot for about 3-4 years and also no fruit. It flowers each spring and this year it was laden with flowers, I saw bees all over it and other pollinators. I was very hopeful.

Here's the plant full of flowers a few weeks ago

Then the petals dropped and I thought it was the start of the fruit about to grow out, but now those are falling off. I've made sure the keep the soil moist (not wet) throughout the blooming time as I read up that it needs to stay watered. The lady from the nursery I bought it from said it was self fruitful. Does anyone know if I need another one to get fruit? Or if it would help?

You may have a seedling which often takes up to 5 years to fruit. If it was not a seedling when you bought it, and is over 5 years old, you need to look at the plant's condition when the flower buds are forming and at blooming time when fruit formation requires that the plant be in excellent health. How long ago did you fertilize it? It's leaves look pale and/or yellow. The leaves should look greener. Other things to consider: When you watered, did you give it enough to soak the entire root ball? Have you re-potted or planted it into a bigger pot since you first got it? Potting mix breaks down fairly quickly. Is the plant root bound? Although it can tolerate a variety of soils it prefers slightly acidic soils and could be suffering micro-nutrient deficiencies.

Thank you for the links, they are very helpful and explained a lot.

I looked again at the tree and it doesn't seem to be grafted so maybe it is a seedling and considering I've had it 3-4 years, however it was pretty large before I bought it at the nursery, it's about 6ft from the soil line in the pot.

I am going to look at getting it some micro nutrients to green it up more. I fertilized it probably middle of February when it started getting warmer here with a general fruit tree fertilizer and then gave a foliar feed of fish fertilizer about 2 weeks ago.

Thank you again though for all the info. Will post here if I end up getting any fruit or find anything else out.

Look what I found today....

I found a berry on my Cherry of the Rio Grande, there's only probably 10 or so but I don't care, at least I know it can fruit now.
