This was on feeder this am, chased some small finches ect but left empty. Hid tail is striped, very fast and quite. The picture is thru double glass window and screen, handheld at 270mm so not a clear as I would have liked. Thanks!
Please identify visitor this morning.
My guess is a Cooper's Hawk .....
I just recently took this photo of a Coopers Hawk sitting on my backyard feeder. This photo was taken at 200mm thru double glass sliding door window - no screen. I was hoping to open the door ever so slightly but no chance. That fails 90% of the time. He even sees me move inside the door.
Wish mine would sit on the feeder!
You should have seen him chasing small birds thru the bushes, was amazing they could move so fast and not hit anything!
The Coopers Hawk can easily be confused with the Sharp-shinned Hawk. The Sharp-shinned is usually smaller and has a squared tail at the end. That's why I determined it was a Coopers versus a Sharp-shinned. They both hang-out around bird feeders.
Your first photo shows a definitively rounded tail. And the Sharp-shinned is more closely sized to a Mourning Dove or Blue Jay. I'll stick with the Cooper's Hawk.
I'm sure you're right b/c I can't tell by the tail myself. However, I have that same tray feeder, and if that is a Cooper's Hawk, it's a really small one. I'd put it at about 12". I had a Cooper's land in the yard and it was much bigger than that. I don't think it could even land on that feeder. Also, the bill looks too small.
