What was I thinking ordering chicks to arrive the same week we might possibly be starting to lamb??! :-)
Well, anyway, the chicks are arriving next week from Mt. Healthy. They are supposed to ship on the 23rd, so should be here by Friday at the latest.
I'm getting 4 each of Buff Orpingtons (yay!), Americaunas, Buff Brahmas (something new!), Partridge Rocks (also new!), and 10 broiler chicks.
NOT arriving through the postal service could be any number of lambs, but no earlier than the 24th, if my math is right. Probably later than that.
Chicks next week! And maybe lambs!
Coooool. I want some partridge rocks and broilers...
Get the camera ready! You know we will be dyin for pictures!
Yesterday the local TSC was taking chicks out of a box marked Mt. Healthy, they sure looked healthy and were peeping up a storm. Baby chicks and lambs, sooo happy for you!! Oh, and yes, I agree, PICTURES!
Oh yeah, there will be pictures! :-)
chicks are here, one day earlier than expected, but that's ok. they sent two extras, so we have 28, but one of the chicks is smaller and weaker. i'm typing onr-handed because the other is holding the chick up on my chest, keeping it warm. i had to feed it with a plastic pipet like i used to use for handfeeding cockatiels, and got a little bit of "gruel" made with chick starter and water and a pinch of electrlyte/vitamin powder down it. they are harder to feed than baby cockatiel the same size because tiels are normally fed by their parents, while chicks aren't. but i managed. i've never had much luck so far getting weak small chicks to survive but we'll see how it goes. pictures to follow when i have the use of both hands.
You could add some boiled egg yolk to that mix.. works great for me. I hope your baby makes it.. I had a chick emergency last night.. turned out okay.. I felt lucky!
Oh, I hope your new baby is doing better by now! When do the lambs arrive?
I don't think she's going to make it. It looks like she never absorbed all the yolk - there's a black dried blob of it larger than a pea stuck to her abdomen and it appears that there is still an opening there underneath it which the old yolk is still attached to. Whatever I've fed her she keeps spitting up, and she's gotten very weak. Some things aren't meant to be.
OTOH, all the rest of the chicks are bouncing around and eating and drinking so that's good!
When the lambs will get here is a guessing game! :) I'd say within the next two weeks we should have some action, but when exactly is very hard to predict.
I'm so sorry to hear that. It's hard to take when they don't make it or aren't supposed to make it.
You'll post lots of baby lamb pics, won't you???
Oh, yes, as soon as they are born, and as soon as my DH does whatever Linux magic he needs to do to get the computer to recognize my camera. He upgraded the OS recently, which was great, but now it doesn't let the camera drive be mounted.
Chick photos as soon as that is accomplished!
