This is Jinny Lind. A brugmansia from hybridizer JT Sessions. I've had this plant for quite a few years but pushed it to the back of the yard and never really paid much attention to it. When i found it again it was 8 feet tall, had Y'd and had a small bud on it.
The cross on this one is a bit tricky. So here is a bit of history as i know it.....
Across the pond Monika Gottschalk had made a cross of Ecuador Pink x Rothkirch which produced some beautiful plants. She named one of them Rubirosa. The other seedlings were just as nice but almost identical to Rubirosa. So they were not actually named individually, although they made it into distribution...Hence these pod sisters are grouped together in a group called "Rubilines". How and when Rubirosa and the Rubilines made it here to the states has always been questioned. Some say that the Rubirosa used in some crosses are dated "pre Rubirosa import" and should be considered rubilines, because those apparently made it here first...
How everything got here and when it got here is sort of a muddled story and nobody knows exactly.
JT Sessions claims this is an actual Rubirosa x L'amour cross. His Cubits website and the BGI website list this as a true Rubirosa cross. The ABADS database, disputing the timeline lists this as an (Ecuador Pink x Rothkirch cross) x L'amour which would make it a rubiline cross...which is it??? Nobody will ever know for sure.
At this point I don't care. The result is a beautiful cultivar with heavy Aurea influences. The fragrance is light but pleasant. Blooms are waxy which makes it a great warm climate brug.
This is the first bloom but she has already (as you can see from one of the pics below) begun to set enough new buds for a flush within the next couple of weeks. JT reports Jinny Lind to be a heavy bloomer....which will be nice.....it took 3 days for the bloom to fully color up, finally settling in to a nice dark pink...I have crossed her with Samba Dancer
First Day....just a bit of color but showing nice form

Jinny Lind and a bit of Rubiline and Rubirosa History
Looks very beautifull Gary, you are a happy Daddy!! I would guess only Monika knows the true Story of Rubirosa, just can tell you i got mine from Monika direct per the Import Permit and she was in Quarantine for two years and has been cleared by Agriculture
I think that is the problem Christa is that some people got it into the country by other means. Because of the similarity of the whole "Rubiline" series it makes it hard for people to know which is which....in my case with this cultivar I'm just interested in the prodigy....after all the genetics (the gene pool involved) is the same...I like this cultivar quite a bit. I have never owned Rubirosa or a Rubiline cultivar. I do however have one of Delisa's seedlings that is Pink Smitty x Rubiline #1. At least with that cross I know for a fact that I am dealing with one of the Rubiline seedlings and not Rubirosa itself. Whatever the case, Rubirosa and the Rubilines are all products of Monika Gottschalks hybridizing efforts and are worthy of using in hybridizing programs...it's a shame that the lineage has become so muddled here in the states......
Rubirosa points out a problem I didn't foresee when I started acquiring my Brugs — including the name of the seller or sender in my records. I have a Rubirosa or at least it was labeled as Rubirosa when I bought it, but I don't remember from whom I bought it. So it could be one of the Rubiline cultivars.
I have to start adding that the seller's name to my records.
It's a shame because you definitely have a point. If you don't know who it came from (and where they got it from) you have no choice but to assume Rubiline........
I was able to go back to my PayPal history to look for my purchase. Luckily, a few of the Brug sellers list the names of the Brugs included in the transaction. I bought my Rubirosa from gordo of Arghya Gardens. She's no longer a member of Dave's, but I'm hoping she'll share her Rubirosa's history on iBrugs where I've also mentioned my purchase. I'd like to know if I have the true Rubirosa.
