How do I root babies? I have only 2 African Violets but would love to learn how to start babies.

did you start them in a potting mix or in water? I always seemed to do better with water than potting mix, but then would have problems moving them to the soil from the water.

Congrats on the babies ... looking good!

I've got tons of babies too. Let's all trade this coming Spring!
Shihtumom- I like violetbarn's website for articles. There is a great one there on exactly how to root leaves for babies.

I've potted up all my baby AV's . . . so that they will have an established root system of their own by the time our local club/show at the end of April.

However, I do have my small tray of strep babies . . . they're getting to the point as well that I will pot them up soon.

Kathy -

You had asked how to root your own babies . . . so I copied this bit out of my Judges handbook . . . I hope it will be useful for you. Please let me - or any one of us - know if you have any questions!

Great information. I have added this thread to my tagged threads. Question- do streps start with the same type of procedure?

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Basically. Streps can be started in the same type of medium as violets . . . I've got to let you know, tho, that what medium works for one, does not necessarily work for another (for violets or streps). I've tried starting them in potting mix, in straight perlite, and perlite/vermiculite mix. The p/v mix works for me best . . . I have a friend that starts them in straight perlite . . . still others I know use potting mix, etc.

The thing about streps, tho, is there is more than one way to "stick a leaf". They can be stuck with the cut going across the leaf, with that in the starting mix. Or, they can be cut along the main vein, and the leaf stuck in the mix lengthwise. You can see in my picture of strep babies, I stuck leaves both ways.

Thank you. I thought some of those cuttings looked like streps.

Carolyn, they are all strep leaves, except for the 2.5 oz cup in the upper left corner . . . those are chirita leaves, I think (I'll have to check!)
