My Dutch Iris are Comming Up!

Hey, I planted around 700 Dutch Iris Bulbs last fall and I have them coming up all over the garden this spring. I can't wait for them to bloom :-))

Wow. 700 would be a very nice explosion of color. That will look great. What method did you use to plant 700 of them? Just have a large pot outside with 15 "Hollandica Blue" bulbs in them. Definitely not 700. Getting them to bloom after year one is the issue down here. Just a small percentage of them do. Probably because there isn't a dormancy period in South Florida.

I just used a pointy garden trowel and planted them. The bulbs are very small, remind me of onion sets. Look very much like them. I planted them in a nice garden bed I had created with soft ammended soil so it was not very difficult.

Ah, that makes sense. The soil conditions you had created made it much easier when it was time for planting. Yes, the bulbs were quite small. I planted some freesia bulbs at the same time, and they were slightly smaller and not planted as deep if my memory is correct.

Are yours sprouting already? These did not come up till the end of May, 2010. Can't wait to see how they do this year.

Now that the snow is one the way out, I see little green sprouts all over, but I think they're daffs and reticulated irises.

Make sure you take pictures of them when they bloom so we can see !

Since this is my first year with the dutch iris, I don't know exactly when they bloom here. I will find out. Mine just have leaves, no bloom scapes yet as it is way too early.
