Rhipsalis trade?

Greensburg, PA

I have a number of Rhipsalis types available for trade and would prefer to trade for Rhipsalis I do not have. I am looking to expand my collection and would be willing to help ID unknown Rhipsalis/Lepismium plants that you might have. Trades to take place in late April or May.

I can provide cuttings of:

Rhipsalis micrantha (correctly ID'd)
Rhipsalis elliptica (correctly ID'd)
Rhipsalis prismatica (correctly ID'd)
Rhipsalis marnieranum(last years selfed seedlings - rooted plants 4-6") (correctly ID'd)
Rhipsalis capilliformis var capilliformis (plant ID in industry)
Rhipsalis capilliformis var "mophead' (difficult to start for me, vegetatively correct but provisional ID)
Rhipsalis horrida (small and limited availability)
Rhipsalis cereuscula (correctly ID'd)
Rhipsalis sulcata (this one was incorrectly ID'd as R. micrantha, but clearly is not the normal micrantha. However, it is an unusual and nice Rhipsalis probably but not certainly R. sulcata - my ID is tentative pending flowering & fruiting for further ID)
Other Rhipsalis also available

I am looking for:

R. clavata (normal form)
Lepismium houlletianum
any Rhipsalis/Lepismium/Hatoria not in my collection (ask as I have many more)

I'd really like to work up a trade with another Rhipsalis collector to expand my collection this year, work on some ID's, etc and can trade pics for ID purposes if you are not sure of the ID of yours.

TIA

something I am definately interested in, but will have to get back to you. I lost all my IDs, and most my rhipsalis collection in a tornado. I know some of the common names of the ones I have, such as ric rac and tornado, but, Ill have to take some pics or something. Its a rainy dreary day, and Ive already moved them outside, so when it gets a bit nicer out there.....

Great, we have time to do this right! They are calling for a lot of rain here today and some, possible flooding tonight, but so far just dreary as well. I think you and I helped someone ID a clavata not too long ago or was it you that had it?

Ive helped ID a few rhipsalis. Might have been. But, I try not to get too involved, as I have found that most of the time these days I am just guessing at IDs lol. Its kind of dissapointing, because I was a BIG rhipsalis collector, and when the tornado went through distroying most my collection and ruining IDs, I gave up for a while. Rhipsalis and any jungle cactus are my favorite plants, and Im ready to get back into it, but I have kind of lost my lust of knowing each and every name anymore.

I know what you mean. I had a big collection about 25 years ago and lost it. There are so many mis-ID'd rhipsalis out there, they are so changeable depending on growing conditions and there are a number of so similar forms that it can be difficult to get a handle on them. Scientifically, the experts don't have this group sorted out very well either, due most, I think, by the fact that the plants have been distributed by people to various areas for hundreds of years. Lots of confusion about them.

Just happened on to this thread - I only have 14 rhipsalis, but really like them - is there a good reference book or site for these plants??

thank you...........jan

You can find more information at rhipsalis.com and cactisguide.com. The authors of these sites have put a lot of work into them. Rhipsalis.com is dedicated to rhipsalis and lepismium while cactisguide. com is more general.

Jan, what kinds of rhipsalis do you have? Post some pics if you are not sure of id's we may be able to help (no guarantees as some of them are really tough to tell)

wow....I had totally forgotten about this thread, until someone else posted on here. Ive been really busy this year, so, I think I will pass for now, because I dont want to leave you wondering, and then never get the time to get back to it.

thanks for the info - will post pics when I take and upload them

Oh, forgot to mention. Get closeup pics of any flowers if you can. They are important for identification. If you get flowers, always try to self-fertilize them to get fruit and take pics of the ripe fruit as well. Many species cannot be distinguished from others without flower and fruit information.
