Even though there is no sign of Spring, it must be on its way. The ducks are bobbing and chattering, the peacock preening and Lewis the Turkey is in full strut. The object of his affection? A wild turkey hen that I raised from an egg who decided to stick around. She is cooing and dancing in front of him and generally giving him that "come hither, big boy" look. The problem? Lewis weighs about 50 pounds. I don't think he is quite up to the deed, but he is certainly trying. If he can possibly succeed, we out to get some pretty spectacular poults.
We already have an interesting wild turkey population around here, ever since my Narragansett hen ran off with a sexy guy from the wild bunch. The offspring have all the attributes of a wild turkey, but are a bit larger and paler than the others. They are good fliers and survive well in the wild population. I doubt that Lewis's offspring will do so well in the wild, but my be excellent on the table.
We'll just have to see what happens....
Love is in the air
