Hi All... I am going to be clearing out my vegetable garden area to start planting and I'm not sure if I should cut these asparagus down or let them contiunue to grow. I just planted the crowns Spring of 2010, so this is there second year of growth, or maybe third year since I planted crowns. Anyway, do I cut or leave alone? This is a corner designated to asparagus.
Asparagus - to cut or not to cut
Anything that is dry, you can cut down to soil level. Anything that is green, and looks like an asparagus, leave alone.
I purchased crowns and left them for a full three years before harvesting.
I'm glad I asked. I was thinking about cutting that one that is about 4' tall. He was so tall and skinny that it just looked odd. So now I know to just leave them alone. 3 full years will mean leaving them alone next Spring as well. Now I have a clear game plan.
Thanks!!
Definitely worth it.

Great article Wisbill!!! Wish I had known all that when I first planted asparagus. I may just have to start some new beds now!!!!
Thanks for the article Bill. I'm starting a bed this year and it will be a great help.
