Sebright breeders

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi all,
I've been looking all over for sebright breeders and really haven't had much luck other than huge hatcheries with dubious survival rates. Does anyone know of a reliable breeder in the eastern end of the US who will ship?
Thanks!
Deb

You can order a smaller order from mypetchicken.. Just be sure the weather is good for your shipment, or any size will have a high death rate.. :)

and don't order them unless they get vaccinated before being shipped. It has to be done as soon as they are born for the Merks. If you don't you will most likely lose them all

It looks like we are combining orders with some other folks. Unfortunately, the hatchery won't vaccinate part of a shipment, just the whole thing. Is there anyway I can vaccinate them once they get delivered?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

It is too late, they have already been exposed.. they need to be vaccinated immediately upon hatching.

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

I guess I need to do some more reading. The other people in the combined shipment don't want to vaccinate. How contagious is Mareks?

We have Sebrights and have never vaccinated them. They are beautiful birds but don't lay many eggs. Adorable when they are little.

Smedgekles -
Can you tell me more about your sebrights? I've read that they are delicate when babies. Any tips?

Conroe, TX

They are adorable when babies, so small and sweet looking. And yes fairly delicate probably because they are so small, although they seemed fairly hardy to me and even as adult birds they are small but fair well in heat and cold.
We have Silver laced Sebrights, two females and a male. They never have gotten very tame although one hen is a bit tamer than the other. The roo however is a mean one.

We had another Sebright roo before we had these three that was not true Sebright, he either was mixed with something or just not well patterned, but he was sooo tame and sweet.

This picture is of the first roo we had, his name was Speckles. You can see how small he is and he is probably a couple of weeks old because you can see his wing feathers sprouting fairly well already.

Tamberlin, are the other buyers opposed to vaccines, or just not inclined to pay extra? If it's a cost thing, I think I'd just pay for the whole shipment if it's not too large. It's usually $.10-.15 per chick where I've looked, one has a flat rate of $10.00 up to 66 chicks.
My adorable little Silver Sebright rooster is as mean as the proverbial snake. Personally, I think snakes are much nicer :(. He's only a coupla months old, so I can't imagine how he'll be as he grows up.
They are very pretty, but I won't be getting more, I like more personable FeatherKids.

Hi Cadmad and Smedgekles,

I offered to pay for the entire shipment of 150 birds but eventually the others caved and everyone is getting vaccinated. I also checked with our avian vet and they don't do it (because the smallest available quantity of live vaccine is for 1000 birds and most of it would go to waste) but extremely strongly recommended it. Maybe that was the bit of info that convinced the others. I'd actually almost purchased the vaccine and downloaded directions before I got the message.

Lizzie (the sebright fanatical daughter) is convinced that she can make sweet tempered pets out of sebrights if she starts training them early enough. I don't know. Her 3 EEs follow her around like puppies, so maybe she has a chance!

We are going to pick up a Black copper maran pullet and a couple of EE pullets today (love those blue and green eggs!) and the seller has a sebright for Lizzie to drool over. I'm betting we will be getting that one too!

Now if only we could get the snow off the ground so the chicken girls can get back outside! I'd like my garage back....
:)

Deb, I'll be interested to hear how the Sebright Whispering goes :). Who knows, maybe my litle guy was abused as an egg......

catmad your roo sounds like ours, very mean. The hens arn't the tamest either but we can at least pick them up every now and then. The little roo is just plain nasty. Ours are about 3 years old.

I have had only two sebrights, very pretty and quite cute. They were both the meanest brats. They would pick fights for no obvious reason at all. I finally had enough of their nonsense and shot both of them the same day. They are extremely cute, but I will bet money you will never make pets of them. They are cute but that is it...Hay

We're all free to make our own decisions about what breed of chickens we choose - but I truly, truly appreciate when those with more experience share their experiences as to what breed has worked, what breed hasn't, and why. (Thinking of my future Cochins). That kind of makes you our broodies LOL

I've actually decided to keep my Sebrights seperately. They will get their own small chicken palace, and live segregated. I don't want to ruin my little (sort of) Peacable Kingdom. Even the Game banties are behaving, but I'm not will to trust the Sebright.

My 3 Silver Sebrights are the sweetest little things and come running to me when they see me. But I did buy another trio of 3 month olds just to get the Golden hen. The 1 roo was mean as heck, the girl died of Mareks, and the 2nd roo was killed my the mean one. He would attack me everytime I turned my back on him. He found a new home before I beat him to death with the plastic feed bucket. My hubbie was cracking up one day when I came in from feeding them. he asked what all the screaming was about. I told him I was beating the snot out of the mean roo lol

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL That is too funny Donna!

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh boy! I hope we have better temperment than that! fingers crossed

Pelzer, SC(Zone 7b)

Got my first Sebright egg yesterday:). And the mean little roo put a hole in it:(. Not only mean, but stupid:(. No chicks for you.....

Richmond, TX

Maybe he had a premonition that it was another rooster in the making.

(Zone 5b)

LOL Porkpal!

Catmad hope you get more eggs soon.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I would suggest that you handle them several times a day and baby talk to them. My Araucana get right up in my face and start turning their head sideways looking at me baby talk to them. I took this yesterday when I was talking with them.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)
