Greetings, Fragrance Lovers,
I'm looking for information on zone 4 fragrant perrenials, and in particular those that give off the aroma without having to be bruised.
Because I am learning that nearly every question has been asked before at DG, I'd be happy just to get links to old discussions. I did my own search and didn't get anything, but maybe I'm not being creative enough with my search terms.
Thanks for any info,
Sarah
Zone 4 aromatics that give off aroma without bruising
Welcome Sarah,
Sorry for the late response...this thread will get more active once the temps warm up a bit. I realized after I hit reply that you specified perennials...ugh...I was going to suggest some annuals that I love the scent of each year. Hoping some of our northern friends might pop in and offer their thoughts as well. As for the repeat questions...we've all been there done that...no worries. And honestly I don't recall someone in your zone asking previously..so see...it's all good. I find that googling my question and throwing Dave's Garden in with it provides a quicker more accurate link any-who. Well I'll list those annuals "just in case." I LOVE Nicotiania - it's an easy one to grow and the evening scent is to die for!! Those plain simply generic purple petunias - there's another spicy evening scent that I enjoy each year. I don't off the top of my head know the hardiness of some of my scented plants without looking them up (lazy, aren't I? LOL). But my daphne's in bloom right now and the scent is just yummy...my lilac has buds on her as well and will fill the air in a few weeks. Daffodils seem to have a large variance in scent...so maybe someone will pipe in here for you. And of course the Oriental Lilies - ohhhh gotta love the 'Silk Road' and old time favorite 'Star Gazer.' Not sure how much help I've been but at least it'll give you something to think on....

Chantell,
Thank you so much for the suggestions. I am starting to open my mind to some annuals. Now that I'm learning to seed my own, it's less expensive than buying new plants every season.
Nicotiana certainly look beautiful and I may try some this year.
Sarah
P.S. Do you have any idea how jealous I am that you already have blooms? ;-) We still have snow on the ground here.
Are you looking for full sun, part or shade???
Dianthus, Phlox, some varieties of Daylily, some varieties of Iris, some of the Hostas, Lavender
My favorite subject, fragrance in the garden, if its fragrant I WANT it. LOL. I have a great list of goodies for you, and have personally grown all of them, in fact most were grown from seed, most indoors under light and then out into the garden after frost, some are reseeders (love them). I'll start with perennials: Chrysanthemum Clara Curtice, only mum that has a fragrance from the flowers not just the foliage; Alyssum saxatilis, Gold Basket; Hesperis matronalis, white and purple; Hemeracaulis (daylily) Hyperion, and flava or liliosphodelus Lemon Lily, (my fav of the two); Roses, shrub, grandifloras, climbers; Peonies, lactifloras (old fashioned), Convallaria majalis, lily of the valley; Lilium, L.A. Hope you find some new favorites and I'm still looking for more and new favs for myself. lol. I have foud the best info on whether to start indoors or out is Thompson and Morgan Seeds, get the catalog for best info. (tmseeds.com) . Another great catalog is Select Seeds (.com) and High Country Gardens (.com) (only place I've seen penstemon palmerii available). Gosh hows that for a list. Good Luck , Kathy.
Wow! That is about as comprehensive a list as I could have hoped for, Kathy! And many of those I recognize as being good choices for my area. I am going to print that list and probably spend many years making my yard into an aroma haven. :-) Thank you, and thank you also, flowAjen.
