My new baby

Pearland, TX

Joker-9 years old, registered Palamino Quarter Horse

He's wonderful, sweet, and gentle. So gentle, in fact, that he falls asleep while I'm picking his feet. Not particularly fun for me, but I'm glad that he trusts me. He is a barrel racing prospect and that is going to be his job.

Palamino is such a pretty color. Good luck and have fun with your new baby. Barrel racing is so much fun to watch!

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I read his name before enlarging the pic and figured he must be an App from old Joker B.

Have fun with him.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

wow sounds like fun

I used to barrel race back in the day. I had a really nice Leo Bar bred mare. Now I trail ride easy gaited horses.

Ferndale, WA

I love horses, now I only have my ole iron steed. Indeed today it was a cool thirty degrees but I rode that iron steed to the senior center. Only six miles away but what a refreshing ride...Hay

Richmond, TX

"Refreshing" ? I'd be frozen!

(Zone 5b)

BBBRRR!!! 30 degrees isn't that cold but riding in it would be!

Pearland, TX

Too chilly for my blood!! Although, I'm a south Texan and therefore anything below 50 is chilly to me.

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

congratulations on your new horse!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Congrats! I'm an ex barrel racer too.. Worked with injured thoroughbreds for many years too..

Glad to "meet" ya!

Pearland, TX

Glad to meet ya too! I'll be asking a zillion questions on the chicken threads once we get moved out to the homestead. :) Which hopefully will be in a few weeks.

I went out to the new pasture where Joker is boarding yesterday for a barrel lesson. He has gained 50 lbs in a week! Can't see his ribs or hips, and he has a nice round belly again. Talk about an easy keeper. Better grain and lots of clover to mow down. He is 16 hh, which means he's a big boy. His nickname is "wide load" since he takes up the most room in the trailer.

I have friends who barrel race and I have never understood how it was judged. The various levels seem to be rather arbitrary...?

Pearland, TX

As I understand it (and I am just beginning), the races are run in age divisions, and then they are given divisions based on number of entrants or payout. The payouts are based on the least times and then split from there by half or whole seconds. It seems like there is no real difference in ability from open 3D to 5D, so I dunno. And penalties vary depending on what organization you're running with. Some give a 5 second penalty for a downed barrel, some give a no time. Apparently in some, if you lose your hat, you can be charged a time penalty too. If the pattern is broken, its a no time as well.

The explanation my instructor gave me to just grasp the whole system was "the fastest rider with a clean run is the winner" and gets the most money.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I have never heard of being penalized for losing your hat. Think I'd leave it at the trailer. LOL

Richmond, TX

I don't think there is any question that the fastest wins the top division, I just don't understand how the rest of the awards are distributed. The various levels don't seem to be determined until it's over... (?)

Pearland, TX

porkpal, I'll be honest, I haven't heard a good explanation yet and my rodeo buddy/instructor tends to explain things as they come up. I'll probably get a better explanation on the day we run the first race. I don't expect to place, its more for the experience.

Ferndale, WA

Well we have already judged you to be the winner, hope you'll stick around the garden and share more pic's...Haystack I was going to say i have never barrel raced but in my old age I'm begining to look like a barrel...LOL...could someone take me out to exercise...Pleeeeeeeezze...

Pearland, TX

Awww, Haystack. You know how to make a girl blush. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'll certainly be posting lots more pics. We just bought 1.5 acres and my goal is to turn it into a mini-farm.

Ferndale, WA

OH I like you already, some pic's of you and your beautiful horse in training would be lot's of fun. I used to go to the gymkannas in Canada a lot and loved the barrel racing and the chuckwagon racing lots. I wanted to ask you, is Pearland close to the Houston, or Beaumont area? I used to live in Houston many years ago and worked in Baytown, and Houston...Haystack

My SIL's family lives in Pearland.

You should get the book " Barnyard in the Backyard". It's very good.

Pearland, TX

Haystack, Pearland is indeed close to Houston. We're moving out a little farther into the country, a town called Rosharon.

Cajun, I have read it. I checked it out from the library a couple of months ago to preview it. I think I will actually be purchasing it here at some point along with a few other recommended books. Cool that your SIL lives here!

Here is another pic. Taken the same day, but he has his bling on. And a little cutie in the saddle with me.

Great picture, that little guy is having a blast...Thanks so much for sharing. We have a lot of chicken heads here who love and enjoy horses and even a few who have worked with them extensively. I don't really know a lot but I have ridden for years and every time I see a horse I want to climb on. We love the pic's...Hay

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I got my copy at TSC and really enjoy reading it. The Backyard Homestead is another good one.

My SIL lives in La but she is from Pearland and her family still lives there.

We have 9 horses. They are rescues. We had a good place for them when we rescued them but we have moved and now we have them farmed out like kids during the depression. Really have to rehome 5 of them. We have 8 different colors but no pallies.
