I was just reading about an escapee from our local zoo. The male Southern Ground Hornbill flew out of the Africa exhibit when his wing feathers grew out faster than anticipated. He has been spotted in neighborhoods close to the zoo. Officials are hopeful he will return to his mate at the zoo on his own. I took these pics last year when I visited the zoo.
Escaped Hornbill
Oh man what an Ugly Bird. ;o)
Great pictures all the same.
How do they keep them inside the Zoo normally ?
Wing clipping.
Wing Clipping ? ::o((
Wouldn’t that hurt ?
Perhaps they should try clipping the Feathers.
Quite obviously time to try something new.
I hope he goes back. Keep us posted.
Interesting looking bird GP, hope you get a visit in your yard, before he's captured again?
I do hope they'll find him soon.
I hope they get him back too, before something bad happens to him. He's not used to cars, etc.
He's beautiful, GP. I hope he can be located, captured and returned.
Any news on the Hornbill, Has there been other sightings report?
I keep checking for news, nothing as of yet.
Just read that the bird is remaining in a residential area very near the zoo. Zookeepers are checking on him. One attempt to capture him failed, when a netting gun misfired. Another attempt will be made on Sunday.
Thanks for the update, GP. At least he's alive and sticking close to familiar quarters.
Happy to hear he's alive and he's receiving care.
Sad news. It seems the zookeepers have been feeding BB. and tried adding a sedative to his food. The first time he came out of it quickly. The second time they tried it, he was captured. However, he was taken back to the zoo hospital and 3 hours later, suffered cadio-pulmonary arrest and died, never having come fully out of sedation.
Very sad ending for such an unusual bird. Thanks for the update GP.
The Zoo director stated they are reviewing their feather trimming protocols to insure this kind of thing never happens again. This bird was away from the zoo for 1 month.

Oh that's such sad news. Thanks for the update, GP.
what a shame.
very sad, seditives can be quite dangerous for animals as to difficulties getting the wrong dose. Now the Bronx zoo really has a problem with an escaped & very poisnous Egyptian cobra.
Yikes! According to what I read, he is definitely somewhere in the Reptile House, which is currently closed till they locate him.
What? he died in the reptile house? Not in a cage or something? What is going on at that zoo.
It didn't say he died; he is supposedly there, probably looking for a warm spot.
How sad. He was a lovely bird. I hope they will be able to get the female another mate!
OH. ha. Okay, I was really corn-fused!
