Some of you might be struggling as I am, and I was hoping to get some opinions and help for all of us rowing this boat.
I am allowed to share my house with 3 very large dogs and 3 very nervous cats LOL
Rosie is a 7 year old Rottweiler mix
Star and Luna are 1 year old White German Shepherds
My finances have tanked in the last 6 months and I'm trying very hard to make pennies into dollars. I will NOT give up my babies unless I have to. What is the most economical way to feed large dogs? Right now they are all on Pedigree Large Breed, and at 4 cups each daily (2 C twice a day) a 34lb bag lasts about a week. I've been able to find it for less than $20 most weeks at Pet Supplies Plus. They also have 50lb bags of regular Pedigree for the same price. How important is that "Large Breed"? I could get 16lbs more per bag for the same price. I'm not sure if I want to go much cheaper than Pedigree, but I must admit I've thought about it. Does cheaper mean lower quality? I know all dog foods have minimum requirements, but how minimum? I have always tried to find food with meat as the first ingredient when I can. What about supplementing with human food? (I do receive food stamps right now and I can share those with my girls!) I can get frozen ground turkey pretty cheap, and those Butcher Specials of almost out of date meats aren't too expensive. Rice? Veggies? My girls all love raw carrots for snacks, should I throw a few in their bowls at dinnertime? I've never given them table scraps. A local processor offers Raw Deer bones for free if you pick them up, but I wasn't sure about that. Iowa had Chronic Wasting Disease and raw was a no no. I don't know about Ohio tho.
I just want to do the best for my girls. This frustrates me to no end and breaks my heart. I can't give them the quality I used to, and extras are few and far between.
How do you feed LARGE DOGS in a bad economy?
