The other day was bad enough! Temps will be down to 37°F tonight. The North, northwest wind will be around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. What will the wind chill be?
It's 42 °F right now; Wind Chill is 36 °F, Wind Speed NW @ 9 MPH
Are you scared? I am.
It's really late. Too tired, I can't go outside right now. I guess I'm going to have to buy some more plants after the first.
At least my eggplant, basil, "new" Rosemary's, oregano, Brussels sprouts and Berkley Tie Die tomatoes are still inside. I'm hurting too much from digging to get the others inside.

Another winter BLAST!!!
It is down to 39 here this morning, not too bad yet!!
The weather station says the temp is 40°F; but my backyard thermometer reads 34°F. The wind is still coming from the North. It feels frigid out there. I'll wait for 11AM to check my plants.
Josephine, do you still do your Elephant Garlic? I would like to plant some one day, but I can't find any here; only the regular garlic heads (which I haven't seen come up yet.) Maybe they froze.
But I did buy some onion plants last week, red hamburger, Texas sweet and those Granex. Squirrels have dug up some plants looking for their stashes. I found 2 acorns planted in one of my large garden pots that I use to grow extra basil in, that's close to my back door.

Robin, I can give you some of the bulblets at the swap it you like, I still have some available.
Those squirrels are a terror, I have to keep all my plants covered if I don't want them destroyed by them, which causes me to have a lot of extra work.
Josephine.
I thought it was chilly this morning! I didn't have time the watch the news but my desktop thingy from The Weather Channel says it is 42 F right now. I'm kind of hoping this is the last cold snap.
Oh, and I think Gourmet Garlic has Elephant Garlic. I don't grow it myself, but I'm sure others have mentioned that Elephant is one of the garlics you can easily start from store-bought. Is that right?
try Whole Foods for a start of Elephant Garlic.
Yes, you can start it from store-bought if it hasn't been treated to inhibit growth.

I'm not too concerned with the weather, yet. I'm taking my sweet time putting out any transplants!
You know, I feel like an idiot, I can't not get elephant garlic to grow from cloves. I've tried for years. I don't know what I do wrong. If it wasn't for the bulbets from Josephine I wouldn't have any at all. They bulbets grow like wild fire, but if i divide the cloves they simply disappear.
Thanks Josephine, they are one of my favorites! I can bring some bulbets to the fall RU too, if you run low.
I really wouldnt call it a winter BLAST.
It is more of a winter BURP.

That is right Carla, we are a long way from being out of the freezes.
True, true......I'm not packing up my sweaters yet. Just hoping, that's all =D!
Hope 'springs' eternal ;0)
Now, I'm concerned. A lot of the trees just stared blooming today. I went out to look and sure enough, the plum, peach, pear and apples look like there're about to pop. Too late to turn back now!
I hope this will be my first year for apples, there're noids, 5 years old and never bloomed. If they didn't get enough chill hours this year, I doubt they ever will. Secretly, I love the anticipation!
I am acting as if it is true spring. Not rational I know but I don't have anything that will be killed by a day of moderately cold temps or even a little short lived snow. I did have one funny suprise. I have been building a new bed all winter, layering house hold scraps and adding top soil every weekend. Today I noticed what looked like some kind of veggie seedlings growing out of the top. Then I remembered I hacked up and buried my Halloween front porch pumpkin and buried it under the heap. I don't have room for any pumpkins but they sure do love the pile of rotting material they are growing in. Lets all hope for an early but cool spring.
drthor...take a pic of the blooming peonies, I haven't seen any blooming in 7 years.

Lynnea, I'm the opposite! I can hardly get the little bulblets to grow!! The big cloves, though, grow like crazy!!
Josephine,
I haven't seen any info on an upcoming Swap yet, here in Texas.
Where would that info be?
Thanks,
~ Robin
I think Sheila will be posting the info coming up soon!
Robin, it hasn't been announced yet, Sheila and I take turns hosting it and it is her turn this time.
I am sure she will announce it soon.
There is one in San Antonio April 2nd, I wish i could go to that one, but I must be here for the Native Plant Society sale.
Josephine.
Hmmm....I could arrange a trip to visit my dad that weekend! LOL
Native plant society sale? Details.
It will be April 2nd at the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens, in conjunction with the Botanic gardens sale.
We will have a special area there.
Josephine.
San Antonio is too far for me to travel.... my Mom is frail and 81 years old. She can't take traveling too long anymore.
~ Robin
I honestly don't do well at that sale. Even if I get there early it seems things are mostly gone. Will your area have the same variety of plants that the past wildscape sales did?
C
I don't know yet Cheryl, we will know as we get closer.
