2011 lettuce babies

Richland, WA(Zone 7b)

Here are some of my Buttercrunch seedlings that I am transplanting today. My Dollar Tree store has these neat little 12 packs-2/$1- I used to save used ones from year to year, but that is just too much trouble. The new ones are so flimsy they break easily-

Thanks for the reminder. I got my seedlings for peas, lacinato kale, and chinese mustards and collards started on the 23rd (can you believe some are up already?) and forgot to do the mesclun mix and wild garden lettuce. I'll try to get them in today. Knew there was something I'd forgotten.

Joe,
Next time, if you sow those seed in a deep enough (yet shallow) container, you wouldn't need to transplant the lettuce seedlings at all. You'd have a "living" salad bowl, and can harvest baby greens to make space for the remaining seedlings...

Just a thought...

These are large fruit bowls we get for meetings. They come with lids...

Gymgirl, I am planting for individual heads- I do harvest early leaves but my goal is heads, not leaf lettuce. Their final destination is the cinder blocks at the edge of my 60' long garden.

How fun! I planted lettuce in the fall (I was late, of course) so haven't been able to enjoy any of the greens, but they've survived the winter and freezes, and they are growing nicely now that it's warmed up.

Want to Tango anyone??
