New forum coming up; two final questions

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I need to poll the group interested in a high-yield/square-foot/raised-bed forum with two quick questions.

Please keep your responses brief (makes it easier to tabulate.)

I'll take a final tally at the end of the day tomorrow and set up the forum based on the majority's decision.

Question 1. Is the name "high yield gardening" acceptable to you? If not, please provide your 2- or 3-word alternative name (but please no sidebar conversations.)

Question 2. Would you prefer for this new forum to be open to all members, or available only to subscribers? (Again, just a simple "open" or "subscribers" vote is all that is needed - let's not get bogged down in discussing the pros and cons of paid vs. open forums ;-)

Please, one post per interested party here. If you wish to change your vote before tomorrow evening, use the "edit" button next to your post.

I would be interested in your new forum!!

1. For whatever it's worth.... I've only been gardening for 2 years, and when I started, I had heard of "square foot gardening" and "raised bed gardening" but I had not heard of "high yield gardening" until I did more reading and was well into learning about gardening. ....Everyone - the experienced gardener and the rookie - has probably heard about the first two, but I don't know how many people in the general public have heard about "high yield gardening". That being said.... You know WAY more about gardening than I do! I trust your decision on the choice of name for the forum. :)

2. I am of the opinion that we are heading into some very dark economic days. If this forum is open to everyone, your forum can be of great help to anyone trying to grow food for their family. So for that reason, I vote it is "open". :) But I have no problem with whatever you decide. ......Thank you for looking into starting this new forum! If it happens, I think it will be very popular.

1. If "Square Foot Gardening" is allowed, that's my vote.
1a. If "Square Foot Gardening" is NOT allowed, then my vote is for "High Yield Gardening".

2. OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

High Yield/Raised Beds*

Open

*By eliminating the word "Gardening" (which could be considered redundant), you could add "Raised Beds" which some people seem to want (???)

(I'm more interested in Raised Beds than this new forum, but that seems not to be where this group's interest is.)

Open to everyone - especially in this economy where many more people are homeless and hungry. We need to find more ways to help each other.

Is it going to be more than Square Foot? Like Jeavons' and/or Chadwick and/or French intensive?

Everett, WA(Zone 8a)

Gymgirl,

Thanks for pointing out that not everyone would find that funny. I removed it.

Paracelsus, et al,
The new forum, on getting the most we can from what we're working with, will have sub-threads. Some are already underway. The admins will move these under, as soon as the new forum is created.

Sounds great. Just in time for me, since I am working on moving towards using more intensive methods this year.

"High yield" is the steady theme running through the votes. "Open" is the overwhelming majority. So with that, I give you the new forum: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/highyield/all/

Make it simple. High Yield sounds like a CD. I would not correlate high yield with smaller garden space.

Missed the deadline to vote! " High Yield Gardening" sounds good to me. Open to one and all. So many good ideas already on this thread, that I have been taking notes!

I like the term "raised beds" which imply high yield and includes square foot.

I have been converting to raised beds, I should be entirely converted this year. I was surprized not to find a forum for that so I search other forums for the topic I am interested in.

Mostly it's what and how to plant. Can I plant the beans next to the dill for instance.

Another big topic I have searched is the construction and planning of the raised bed garden. I have decided on half of my beds to run one way, and the other half to run the other way.

Maintainence of the raised bed garden is useful. How to maintain the soil, how to put in soaker hoses ect. I tried the lazanya method the first year and one of my beds did poorly. I am now mixing store bought dirt with yard dirt, and then with my compost (in various degrees of decomposition). I supplement my soil with lime, gypsom, iron, ect.

Last year my raised bed tomatoes were etherworldly!!!! I could not play sophies choice with my seedlings so instead of not planting as thick, like I decided, I actually planted thicker!! Eventually it turned into a mass of vines but I got a good crop. I probably could have gotten a second crop when the weather cooled if they didn't get so overgrown but I'm not complaining.

Whatever it's called, I'm looking foward to it! It's long overdue, I have to scour the web to get pretty raised bed garden pics!

I like high yield/raised beds. Just "high yield" is not desciptive enough to me. An open forum is always a more useful forum. THe more traffic the better.

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Definetely high yield raised beds, just say high yield doesn't fill in enough blanks
