Opinion on episcia

Ann Arbor, MI

Hi guys (gals),

I have a couple epsicia starts that have developed brown edges on the leaves (see pic). What could this be? I dont think it's too little humidty since they've been in a terrrarium, but it is possible that they didn't get enough water at some point. Or too much? Fungus? Bacteria? Too much light? They've been off to the side and not directly under a one tube t5 light that seems just fine for my streps and AVs.

As you can see II have NO instinct for these yet. Help! ...

How's the weather in your part of the world. You've got D-mail.

A 2nd question: what kind of potting mix are you using? Is it porous or dense--the edge, I think is mix, looks almost like peat.

I will look around, but my first instinct is too much water or perhaps bright light shining on the leaves where big drops of water have formed.

Hi Lynn & Lane -- Actually putting what both of you've said together makes some sense. These are pretty new -- about 2 weeks with me, and were in the terrarium with 2 other episcia that are planted in a nice porous (mostly perlite) mix. Those look pretty good. But the new ones came from Texas and were pretty well wrapped up and watered when they arrived. But in a heavy soil. That'd probably be just fine way down there. But I ALWAYS repot into a lighter mix for my conditions. For some reason, I just didn't with these. Duh! I will try the lighter mix and see if that helps.

Don't you just hate when you can't tell if you've over or under watered?

Thanks much!

BTW, Lynn I tried pinning down some stolons like you suggested -- it's working really well. Good trick.

I don't think you're that far off now, Lynne!

For now I just need to focus on keeping the little buggers alive,
but maybe someday!  With a whole lot of practice (i.e. killing other episcia) , a LOT more time,  a move south 1000 miles or so, some luck and just the right plant ... it could happen ... Right?? :(
