anybody know how to prune these

This is a collage - two pics of the same bush. It is one of those yellow/greens that looks like it can't make up its mind between being a shrub and a tree. It got a little ice damage, wnich we cut out. We have 5 of them, all blocking the view of the front door from the street, which would be okay, except they give someone a place to hide, if they were of a mind to.,

We can't decide how to prune them, if at all/ All advice appreciated.

Do you know what they are?

Is it an arbor-vitae ? Check out this link below. If so, you should be careful pruning it or them.

all my research, including a trip to the nursery, says it is some type golden cypress, maybe Chinese. It probably needs to be left alone, except to trim it back out of the driveway.

I planned to buy Leland Cypress to plant for a privacy blind but they say it is showing disease so nobody is selling it. Now I don't know what to use unless I give in and put up a fence.

Thanks for your help.

I liked this article which is reinforced with a before and after picture.

begonianinny,
leyland cypress don't like our warm temps, that's why they are starting to have disease problems. It was only a matter of time.
Arborvitae is a great substitute. It might not grow as quickly as the leyland, but likes our climate much better. Your picture is probably a type of arborvitae, one that I'm not familiar with. It is very cool looking!
There is one, 'Emerald Green', that is very similar to leylands, but would do much better.
Hope this helps,
Barb
