here's the pics I promised. To compare size the hen is by a 3 gal waterer
They were 5 months old the 19th
Hey Annie
They are beautiful, Donna! Wow! They're huge too! What is the difference between a light sussex and a split coronation? I have heard the term before but don't know what it means. Thanks so much for sending the pics, the stink eye picture made me laugh out loud! You have beautiful chickens!
O.K what is wrong with my Dels eye. I head whopped him pretty good a few days ago. He thinks I am food sometimes and bit me drawing blood. The babies inside do it too. They love fingers when you are trying to put their food in.
He gives no outward signs of being sick, no mucus or rattling sounds. Just the 1 eye has growth and look like a bubble/fluid??. I have the eye antibiotic cream. Or is he getting sick. This was the only pen that didn't have a sick bird when I had 1 each in the other 4 pens with colds but i treated them all too
You can't visualy tell the difference in a Split and Light. Only when you breed can you tell. If you get all chicks that look like light then light is what you have. If you get a mix in the chicks then you know you have splits. In my case when they hatch chicks I will get pure Coronations, Lights, and Splits since are my birds are supposed to be splits. I can't wait for them to start laying so i can hatch some babies. Now after I have chicks and breed a Coronation with a Split hen I will get 50% Coronation chicks. Buying splits was the cheapest route to get what I wanted- the Coronations and all of them are supposed to be good layers of jumbo eggs
I don't think it's from him being "head whopped" LOL.
It looks like a pic I saw on BYC called "bubble eye." It's an illness but I don't remember what antibiotic they said to treat it with. Poor guy!
Is there a color difference? Are the lights one color, splits another and the coronation yet another color? I'm confused!
Beautiful birds!
the Coronations have a lavender collar/hackles. The Splits and Light look the same. The Coronation splits are made by Breeding a Coronation Sussex with a Light Sussex hen. There are also Silver splits but to rich for my blood lol. They are from Silver Sussex Roo and a Light Sussex hen. They are getting 300+ for 6 eggs of the pure Silvers
Here is the link to GreenFire Farms. He is the one that important them from Australia back in 2007 I think

300 bucks for six eggs? I'm in the wrong business! I:ve read about Greenfire farms and wondered if they were really "that good."
Thanks so much for the explanation and pics of your chickens, They are just gorgeous! I "think" there is one boy and one girl in the two I have. I need to send pics.
Hi Donna: I was just showing my chocolate Seramas on ZZ's thread, then I came here to read and see your Coronations. I clicked on the link you posted and was reading about the future of the Greenfire Farm. I found a chocolate orphington they are going to introduce in the states. They then mentioned the only chocolate bird that existed here in the States was the serama. WOW!!! I have been trying to find out if anyone else has ever seen chocolate seramas? I have never seen them, but I have two of them. I believe the chocolate is rare, but would love to know if anyone else has ever seen them...Thanks for the link Donna, I'm going to spend some more time looking at what they have, and oh, Yikes Your right they are expensive...Hay
Yum, melt in your mouth chocoate Seramas! They're all so pretty.
Donna, how is your Del doing? Hope his eyes are better.
Today I put the 2 light sussex chicks in with Charlotte since she only had 5, she didn't blink and just took over the extra babies. Goat, what a Drama Momma, sheesh! I had to put gloves and a coat on today every time I cleaned their pen. She's fierce and kept running at me and pecking. She is very gentle with her babies but dosn't want me any where near them or she goes crazy. Charlotte doesn't bother me, she just goes into the corner and tucks her babies under her and waits until I'm done cleaning. They are both soooooo darn good with their babies!
some moms are just over protective. mom silkie has her babies out during the day and used to me walking around but Hubbie came out and Billy Idol tried to get him lol
I love those protective mommas. I remember our silkie hen had two babies and she chased my wife and I was laughing so hard my honey wanted to beat me...LOL...Hay
Have you noticed when one of us has a sick chicken that the rest of us get all concerned and try to help? We are all Chicken God Mothers/Fathers. Seriously though, these chickens have a lot of people that care about them. It helps too. It really helps.
That's cute LFJ.. and so true!
Yes how true. I feel bad for any of us when we lose a pet
Thats why I love you Ladies so much. Your such genuine caring friends. I'm really lucky...Hay
Hay, did you ever find out who bought those $5000 chickens? I want to know if we get to take you shopping for cute new clothes.
It's weird, seriously, I always think about all of you on this forum and hope all is well in your lives.
I'm with you Annie, before I finally broke down and got my computer I would never have believed I would ever actually have friends I'd never met. I thought the whole idea was just dumb. Now I find I'm eating my words. I still can't believe I feel so strongly about all of you here on this forum. Even crazier is the idea that I feel I fit in with all these LADIES. I'm not sure what that says about me...LOL
Because you're tolerant, versatile, and cute?
LOL, Exactly, PP! Hay has all of those qualities and MORE.
