Phemeranthus calycinus

Arlington, TX

Does anyone grow this wild flower? I read it grows in sandy rocky soil and I like its succulent leaves and the flowers. I am wondering if I plant them into a rock wall if it can take the heat? This puzzles me about a lot of plants. They say they grow among rocky outcrops etc. in hot dry places but many say protect from intense afternoon sun and heat. I would like to plant a lot of these along a rock border of one of my beds but those rocks get very hot in the summer.

If that's what I think it is, it grows in the ozarks? But looks like the official range includes the panhandle and into NM? "Hot dry" would mean something very different in those two places. I wonder if the seed source would matter?

Portulaca in general are ridiculously heat tolerant. I had one seed itself in some dirt in the back of my truck and grow there all summer, baking on hot metal with only rain for water...

If you decide to try it let us know...

I have been looking at them on high country gardens for a while. It is listed as a TX native on some natives websites. I will order some if I can find them cheap enough. High country gardens is pretty good but tends to be expensive sometimes. I will definately post some pics and let everyone know how they do. Too many plants, too little money.
