Paper-Spined Cactus (Tephrocactus articulatus)
rudiw,
This is the regular T. articulatus (non-variety).
The oligacanthus variety has spines like these at this link:
http://cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus=Tephrocactus&species=articulatus
Would you like your photo moved to the right page?
Xeno
Hello Xenomorf,
I don't know what you mean with spines, do you mean "a long leaf like a nail of a bird"?
The cactus which this cutting was taken from had this..
I bought the cactus in person, from mr Pieters, he is well known and made for example a desert garden for the zoo "Noorderdierenpark"in Emmen Holland. I can not imagine he would sell me another plant, he is the specialist, but you might be right , i dont know.
This is the info i have, people on this site are the specialists. If its the wrong plant or the wrong name, you may move it to the right page, but you have to be shure!
I am very sure.
•spine - "spur: any sharply pointed projection"
•spine - "a small sharp-pointed tip resembling a spike on a stem or leaf"
I can send another picture of the plant which the cutting was taken off. The spine is not there anymore the plant is at least 20 years old and had not good soil or food but its alive! The plant on the photo is a cutting from that plant and is very small because of not much light etc. the original one was bigger thicker fatter, because i am an amateur the next shoots became smaller and smaller..Thats why it might look different.. i dont know this is all the info i have
Yes, please send the other picture.
I make another picture of the mother plant wait a moment please!
i have send two new pictures of the motherplant, she is not in good shape, might be rotten inside but if you look good you see she has 2 spines left, it was difficult to make a photo with my laptopwebcam. The plant had longer ones when i bought it.
I promise you that for 100% shure
I bought it as a special cactus in the 80's today i came to this site searching for a picture, there was no picture so i sent one, thats how the situation is. I am not a specialist. , i bought it as a oligocanthus, last month i wrote the name on a paper because the name was on a plastic pin that eroded, felt apart, so i got interested again thats how it started...
I hope you will find the picture i dont know where it is on the site, i am new.
I had in the 80's 600 cactusplants i was specialised in astrophytum ( they have no pins)
the man mr. Pieters had a astrophytum myriostigma QUADRICOSTATA, i havent seen this one on the site, has anyone seen such a astrophytum ? is it rare?
I will stay at my opinion, i searched the web, mr Pieters is a well known , was he's retired i guess, dealer of cactus plants with customers from the dutch "succulenta"club, he had a greenhouse with a collection off a few thousand different plants, he is THE specialist in the netherlands i think. I say as an amateur: my oligocanthus is an oligocanthus. He couldnot afford a wrong name for a plant, but if some one can prove it is not an oligocanthus let me know. I cant imagine its not an oligocanthus, mr Pieters had customers who fly around the world to see a cactus..i cant imagine it..
lets wait for comments.. :)
i looked at the pictures mentioned above, i live in a colder climate, less sun, less warm, it might have an influence on the spines, i dont know, my cactus looks very different i agree that for shure. I am a man of honor, if the forum members say its not an oligocanthus, i will contact the president of the succulenta club for an extra opinion, i can't imagine but now i think 50% shure, but i am not a specialist..what an adventure!
I have no doubt that you are a person of honor. There might be some sort of mix-up somewhere, I don't know where. But the oligacanthus variety would still have spines, even in a colder climate, only the spines would be shorter. I do not see any spines on yours.
The photos of the mother plant did not post. Will you try again?
Xeno.
