Several months ago, after a Horrible Chicken Massacre, a friend presented me with several little mixed hens to help make up the deficit. One was a pretty little thing, small, buff with black tail and darker head with speckles. Not friendly, but not particularly skittish, either. Some time back (a week? more?) she disappeared. I was surprised, she flies very well. and is alert to anything that goes on around her. She was a far-forager, so not often in sight. I thought maybe she'd just started to sleep in a tree, but didn't see her, tho I looked. I was sad, I liked her.
Well, yesterday, she flew into the midst of breakfast, gulping food and water at a furious pace. Disappeared as quickly as she arrived. I had my suspicions...
Yup. Found her yesterday on a nest in the shed. Not safe, so I made her a drop cage, and she's now as secure as I can manage. Fed her this morning, and saw the ten little eggs....

Must be spring :)
Congrats cats. I am happy for you
Yes, congrats. Sorry to hear about the lost chickens.
Yay! Little fuzzy butts always make things better.
Peep Peeps , Yaaaay!
What rooster is likely to have sired the imminent newbies?
The one that was watching as she made her great escape...LOL...what a great story Cat, CONGRATS...Hay
Congrats! I know you are eggcited.
*GRIN*
I'm pleased, even tho it puts a crimp in my plans for buying new (full bred) peeps, but they'll be special. As to the most likely Poppa, well, that could be anyone, and there's a wide variety to choose from. Since the massacre, I have far more roos than hens, and they run the gamut. Could be anything from a Bantam Barred Cochin to a huge blue Mutt rooster, with Turkens, Standard Cochins and Ameracaunas in the mix. They will certainly be interesting, unless she's chosen one particular Fella.
Usually I have an idea when the peeps will (peep, I mean) but not this time. Guess I'll just have to be ready.
Time to build a new Palace.....
Oh good! Take pictures and we can have a guessing game!
How sweet! Thanks for sharing the story. Can't wait to see photos of the babies...Moma sounds like a very pretty girl.
Oh, a guessing game. That's always fun.
I'll start taking pics of the roos, the hen will have to wait untill they hatch, I think it's too dark in there.....
I'll just watch, I have too much trouble trying to figure it out...
My knowledge on Chicken genetics leaves much to be desired. I will ask how people arrive at their conclusions, so be ready:)
YAY, a guessing game! I learn so much from the Guess'ers here!
Ooh, can't wait!
