Well, I'm beginning to wonder "What next?" Last night, something burrowed right underneath my Scabiosa Pincushion Flower and in the process, beat up the volunteer vining petunia plant that managed to survive the freeze. The hole is about as big as a football, stuffed with dead grass. I guess it is that dang rabbit again?? Destroyed the roots of the Pincushion Flower. I don't think I'm going to have anything left come spring.
One very discouraged gardener.

Rabbit hole ??
I was going to say squirrel, but it looks a little big for that. I know how you feel, I get plants destroyed all the time, by squirrels, raccoons, opossums, even my neighbor's god has gotten into the act, he is pretty good size and likes to come to my garden to pee, then he digs around and uproots the plants, it is a constant struggle.
Patience my dear.
Josephine.
Put on a glove, stick your hand down the hole, and grab it! It could be dinner...
It could also be dangerous, you don't know what is in there.
Got your own dog or cat? Put their poop in there - dirty cat litter too. This drives them away. Human (preferably Male) urine does a trick to them also. I used some doggie (wee-wee) training drops that I found at walmart's. There's no man at my place anymore. They say that moth balls or strong odor cedar chips work too. Just watch what you use near those edible crops.
I know they sell "Wolf's Urine" online, alot of people use that to keep the deer away.
But my brother is still shooting at the 3 coyotes that have been lurking near his property. He was shooting at them on Christmas Day! Three of them shredded one of his big dogs, 9 months ago. It was so dark that they couldn't even see what was happening at the time. Now he installed some floodlights and carries his rifle out the door when he lets them out. He had let them out just so they could do "their thing," before going to bed for the night. He lives on the other side of Terrell, near the 20 - 30 exits.
I forgot..... Mace (hot pepper spray) works too. Spray around plants and at the places where that dog enters your yard. Just remember to wear gloves in your garden after using the mace or hot pepper spray.

I used a garden tool and cleaned the dry grass out of the hole. No critter in there, just very rounded and packed and stuffed with grass. Gathering all that grass was quite an undertaking for one night's work, which makes me think it is probably the rabbit because when they have babies, they leave them covered in a hole like that and only come to nurse them once or twice a day. So I suspect a rabbit was preparing a nursery. LOL. But why did it have to choose to put it right under my Scabiosa pincushion flower!! DH commented that in 30 years here, we never saw anything like this until after I got seriously involved in gardening.
And my Rottweiler checks out every strange scent multiple times a day and always alerts on several places but during the night she's fast asleep beside my bed and not out there guarding my plants.

We have Wabbit's that like to venture in and out of our yard and leave their fertilizer pellets behind. Not bad except our mini schnauzer has a thing for wabbit poo and treats em like malt balls. The only nice thing about the snow I saw was all the wabbit trails going in circles inand through the flowerbeds and yard. Every 20 feet or so was a nice little piles of poo!
