Mixed Clematis
Do you know what size their plants are when they ship them?
Very small.
I didnt have a good experience with Donehues.
Many Daves gardeners like them and have had good luck.
The plants I got were small and a few had under developed roots. I should have repotted them and left them a year.
The one sucess I had was Bijou. I really wanted it and it grew well. Big hopes for this year.
ok, they are off my list. I know where I can get them and they are nice and big.
Dont discount them just because I said so. Bigger more established plants work for me.
Here is the Garden Watchdog run down on them, many people seem satisfied

I have shopped else where and have gotten great plants. I would rather stick to what I know.
The plants I received from the Donahues co op were liner plants. I did pot mine up into gallon pots and then heeled them into the ground for the winter. I had one last summer that was questionable as to whether it was dead or not - I am hopful that it made it, however I would also be surprised.
If you want to spend the money, Silver Star Vinery has a good variety of ready to plant clematis. Biggest root balls of all the Nurseries. Brushwoods not bad either but still smaller.
I think most if not all retail sellers end up buying the small liners from Donahues and reselling them. They may grow them out a little and then they might grow them out for a long time and ask more money, it all depends on the nursery. All clematis have to come from somewhere don't they!

Joy Creek has a photo of the plants they send.
I resent paying 10 dollars for a liner plant and thats what I think Dodehues sent last year. It costs to heat and tend and fertilize a plant for the extra time it takes to make a bigger root ball in the greenhouse.
The plant is better off doing that growing there than in my yard. I gladly pay the extra to get a plant that has a good chance of surviving in my garden.
I love Joy Creek nursery...... they are wonderful to work with.
I made big order to Silver Star this year, I will see what they send. I tend to avoid buying online for clematis, only because I usually get a small weak plant, if you're not that picky, wait until midsummer and pick up some from Lowes/Home Depot. By that time they are 1/2 price. I picked up 75 clems once at Lowes for .50cents a piece. Worked the rest of my shift in the ambulance with flats sliding around. Pretty funny, brought them home, soaked them in week fertilizer solution, put in open shade and 1 month later I was looking for homes for them.
Sooooo your into plant rescue too?
Thanks for the tip.
I have to hope I never see a sale like that or I'd likely buy them all.
Rescue comes with the job title, I can't help myself!
Now Im getting antsy to look at clems again.Completely forgetting the fifteen that are due here in May.

See, now I have to look each one of the clems up! Dirty pool, I am so weak... Hang on Visa, we're going for a ride!
I am known as a funny woman. Sense of humor goes a long way.
The VISA ride is going to be a shock when the shipments are charged.I cant remember who charges when the order is placed and who charges at shipping.Thats how things get out of controle here. This is my Xmaswreath form trellis for Vagabond clem 'Its cabletied to 2 rebar s
Dem - you are just too funny! Love the Visa going for a ride line!
Jo Ann - I don't think we're supposed to realize all we have coming to us in May in order to buy more. Now I have to look at the ones you ordered since there's one name there I think I recognize and wanted. This is where I get into trouble, not all the bags of plants (including clematis) I just bought at HD while we just went to buy paint.
Carolyn - do you think Dem and Jo Ann are trying to tempt us?
Gorgeous, Dem. The close-up is terrific and the garden is like a magazine cover but better.
Beautiful!!!!
I think they are trying to tempt both of us, Arlene.......
Such gorgeous photos..
You're right, Carolyn!
I think they are trying to get us all in trouble with that Visa card...lol
Last year at season's end I got a bunch of Clems for $3.50 each and I thought that was a steal.
And now you don't think $3.50 was a steal, Marie??? It's great!
Visa got a workout today and needs to rest tonight.
This has nothing to do with clematis but we gardeners are always looking for inspiration and ideas so...
I went looking for the Wayside cover and ended up with some great ideas here:
http://serenityinthegarden.blogspot.com/2010/10/repurposed-and-recycled-creative-ideas.html
Scroll down to the tumbled glass and check out the photos - fantastic.
Now I'll try and find the cover again.
Love the recycled glass wall, very cool.
Nice photos. I have seen recycled glass in water and fire features on garden shows.
There is also recycled tires that are used for mulching kids play areas.
Tires are made with so mant chemicals I would be hesitant to use that stuff.
They believe it makes a softer landing than gravel.
