CLOSED: New bird at our feeder. Need help to identify.

Delhi, LA

We have a pair of new birds flocking with the Goldfinchs coming to our feeder. They are about the size of the Goldfinchs but just a little larger. They have a red head with small top knot similar to a cardinal. Their brests are red. The wings, tail and back look a lot like the finchs but have a slight tinge of red between the feathers.

Sorry, no way to get a photo. Any suggestions?

Or male House Finches?

Thanks a lot. It could be either one. I'll have to get a better look at the beak tomorrow. Seems like that is the biggest difference.

Jim we have a lot of male House Finches in our area. I would make a bet that's what it is. Did he look like this? They were vary on the amount of red they have.

After looking at the pictures, I think they are purple finches.

Not impossible (they are uncommon in LA, but do occur in winter), but House Finch is far more likely (common in LA).
