Any ideas out there on rooting new rosemary plants from an old friend in the ground? Can you root cuttings straight to the ground, or do you need to lay a branch over and cover with dirt while attached to the mother plant, then snip and move after it roots? My rosemary and ground phlox plants are blooming today by the way...
Rosemary rooting from established plant
I usually take cuttings and root them in small pots just like other plants.

Yes... both of my rosemarys ( upright and prostrate) will put out delicate roots while laying on the ground. I weight the upright rosemary stalk down to the ground with a rock till it has developed roots.
And yes, I have then taken cuttings and potted up with no problem.
Thanx guys, I have to do SOMETHING to this poor plant, it is a beautiful landscape bush, but dead to the middles. I think I will take the route of least care to establish roots, (plant a branch laid over til it roots and I return home), took 2 xtra days off from work, will miss the money, but the plants needed me as well as time to renew CDL w/HazMat endorsements, so...study time. Its easier to do than test these days, but that is the way it is. Confederate Rose branches trimmed back to the ground, crinum lillies moved to new location, began mounds to set out muskmelon later this spring, and tomorrow I will be tending the rosemary. The ice didn't hurt my onions, chives, and they were not even mulched. I read also you can dig parts of rosemary plant with a bit of root and they will grow as a third alternative to establishing new plants. And Thats All Good. Enjoy the sun in your bones guys, I know I am. Thanx!!!
Hard to garden when you are on the road, I am sure, but it sounds relaxing to be home working outside.
When do you find time to study for your CDL?
Hope both the gardening and testing go smoothly for you...
Gardening is food for the heart, and soul, eyes tired from looking at asphalt, gotta get my hands in the dirt, studying is for anytime in between, since the eye muscles are trained from driving for the majority of my life, they are hurting if they arent seeing something, watching everything, and reading helps exercise them at meals, waiting loads, etc. Chuckl, truck drivers are known for not being ABLE to stop staring, and spotting things others miss, I get asked by Border Patrol on many occasions if I have seen anyone dodging around in the desert...Not reading, not studying wouldn't be very professionally smart, but getting my hands on real books with something more than someone else's fantasy is hard.
