how do you discourage sparrows from birdfeeders?????
unwanted sparrows
They don't eat sunflower seeds, so maybe you can substitute them for grain. Most other songbirds will eat sunflower.
Since I have bluebirds in the yard, I trap sparrows. Some may not want to go to that extreme, but it's an option that works.
reddirtretiree--- check your d-mail please.
Red,
Yes they do eat sunflower seed...here they do! :)
Don't feed them millet. I learned that the 1st year we started to feed birds...
They love sunflower seed here too and most other places I know of. They are not picky eaters.
The ones here never eat it. I have a tray full all the time and they never get on it. They love the millet, though.
I don't know if anyone has tried the Halo.

I feed only sunflower, peanuts and thistle and I've seen them eat all.
Mrs_Ed,
Yes, we tried the "Halo"...
It was a waste of nearly $30...the HOSP kept coming and it kept other birds away. They really try and push the sales on that here for folks since it was developed at UNL just 3 miles away from us...LOL
Here's another link with more info about it and the cost...

We have learned to keep all birds happy...including the HOSP :)
It's said that House Sparrows don't like Safflower. Though in my experience, they'll eat whatever you put out. :-(
Carla
yup...they eat everything I put out.
