Scaup? Redhead? Can't get it. The bills are so weird looking -- like they were attached with clay. I have 3 pics.

strange indeed. Plumage looks like Scaup but the bills look Eider or Scoter to me. Really strange
I'm thinking Redheads, but I'd like to see closer pics to be sure. And I suspect the clay might well be exactly that - they dive down to the bottom of the water to root around for worms in the mud, and could easily get some on their faces if it's at all sticky.

Agree with Resin thinking dirty faced Scaup's...lol
Looked at them again today . . . last time they looked more like Redheads, today they look more like Greater Scaup! Best to leave them as unidentified Aythya species.
