heater question

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

Like I've mentioned before this is the 1st yr for this water garden. I got a heater..Now, are there any rules as to when I put it in the pond? I haven't "dropped" the plants either. Do I trim them back before I drop them to the lowest point? I have a zebra grass that's 5 ft tall. I checked plantplace.com and couldn't find anything. Thanks for any help. "T" :)

i trim everything back before sinking. i however do not use a heater. 47" deep seems to keep everything alive over the winter.

Depending on where you live and how deep the pond is and how cold it gets...... How's that for a lot of depending.
I'm in zone 5 late October I trim all plants and drop to bottom (3 feet deep) and add a floating stock tank heater.
We suspend the heater from a 2x4 across the middle of the pond, just so it is sitting on the top of the water. Works great, keeps the water open in the center.Shut off the waterfall and the fountain remove and clean the pumps, falls and fountain and get them ready for spring. And say good by until spring, all the fish survive and plants are ready for spring, I just lift them and set in place.
Good luck and Happy ponding

Sledder,
I have a zebra rush that I got this year and I am not sinking it, along with some other reeds. I read that anything hollow will "drown" if sunk. I didn't sink my horsetail last year and it came back fine. I imagine there are pros and cons to every thing. I have a de-icer that I use and I will make sure that the zebra rush is near it.
Hope this helps.
