what do you bring in over winter??

Port Huron, MI(Zone 5b)

Hi All...I am in zone 5 and have always brought just about all my bulbs indoors overwinter..glads, peacock orchids, amarylis, gloxina, canna, even iris fans. My neighbor leaves all hers out except the canna. what do you do..I guess, I am probably over cautious for not wanting to loose any

Sandy
We've had several mild winters here in Michigan. A lot of snow cover, temps above normal overall.
I take in my Dahilas, Cannas, galds.
They might survive yes but you are taking a gamble if we get a NORMAL or below normal winter.
I have a friend in Plymouth who has Datura come up every year as a perrenial. I told her she's just lucky or lives in a Micro-climate.

Sandy, never heard of bringing in Iris fans... wonder if I could do that with my fortnight lily in the iris family (Dietes morea). I am in 6/7, callas will survive outside, also gladioli. Never tried cannas or caladiums, or colocasia, those I bring in. Also have to find room for Agapanthus, Jacaranda, Bauhinia, and so on... Besides the flat of 'Let's Streak' hostas... What do you do with the Iris fans, exactly? John

John, in zone 7 we leave all our bulbs in the ground, and let them be naturally mulched with leaves. The only bulbs I ever lost were to varmits, not ole man winter.

Thank you, "eyes". That sure would be easier! John

Well Sis,
Now you've got me thinking. Naturally, all my brugs and passiflora and canna come in. I just am so scared to leave out my peacock orchids and I'm sure my amarylis wouldn't make it.Perhaps this year I'll try to mulch real heavy on everything else. Thanks for the encouraging ideas

Sandy,I also have peacocks, mysiyuki(sp)oh heck,Japanese orchids, tulips, muscarri, daffys, hyacinth, painted ferns, ostrich ferns, glads, iris, and surprise lilies, gazers and put about 8in.of mulch on them plus hosta' Also,I have created wind barriers(hedges)to help' Plus, heavy clay soil, that too, might also have something to do with them surviving' I'm not bragging, maybe just been lucky, don't know' Sure would hate for you to lose anything' Sis'
