SAGE for Smudge!

Dallas, TX

Can anyone tell me what kind of Sage grow around here? I want to learn to make Smudge. The smudge sticks that you burn? I want to grow but 4Paws says it has to be a certain kind of sage. You can use sage or Lavender. I was given one of the sage sticks to burn for good luck. I swear ... I got a job ... went from a -4.96 to 709.00 in the bank in in week end. lol
Any of you guys know anything about it?

My grandmother used to use garden sage (lived in TN, that's what grew there). I have used the native TX sage in a pinch. Grandmother also used Cedar for smudging.
I used it to run fire ants out of the garden. It worked.

Deep South, TX(Zone 9b)

The Native Americans used sage to drive out the evel sprits and the cedar bark invites the good sprits.

Our last house had a friendly ghost and when ever things got too "strange" we would sage the house and things would calm down. Also works for people that would come over and leave a bad energy.

I'm not really that superstitious, but I know there is alot of things we know little about and sometimes the old ways still apply today.

Oh how wonderful! you guys know all about it! I got to go see a client right now, will be back later.
I work for Summit Merchant Solutions as a Merchant Sales Adviser.
I will put one of my Flyers online for all of you in business and take credit cards and checks. I love meeting people and helping them out and lowering their rates!

What is smudge?

Deep South, TX(Zone 9b)

I would descripe it as useable smoke.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Incense?

Deep South, TX(Zone 9b)

I guess incense could be included. A quick glance a a google included ceremonial uses and smudge pots use to be used to keep orchards from freezing.. I think it is also used to descripe a sooty smoke. I was just trying to keep it simple and general.

I actually like the smell of burning sage although it is rather strong and weedy and use it as an incense sometimes to cover heavy smells. You never know about what dogs will bring in or wear.

Dallas, TX

Robin thanks for all that wonderful info! Sound like you can buy it kinda cheap. I got a neighbor who is an invalid, she can learn to make th sticks so we can sell them ... that is if she dont decide to smoke them.
Tom you did say you can smoke it right?, so what do you derive from smoking it. lol
Gymgirl I have attached a picture for you. :)

No, I don't smoke it. I've heard about some kids that tried it once tho. Some kids will try anything.

Go to the voting booth! They're assessing interest in offering the Dave's Garden Coffee Cup for sale again. We need your vote!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Really! I love them, I bought four the first time I went to College Station. I drink my coffee from them and pop them in the dishwasher. They are great.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia will that work with any kind of Salvia? I trim salvia greggii quite often which is woody and smells great, I could save you the trimmings.
Josephine.

Careful what you get to burn ....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvia_divinorum
this one is dangerous.

Deep South, TX(Zone 9b)

There are too many varieties of salvias, I would be afraid to say. All the ones I've bought, sold or collected have been white or a silver green but a different variety than the White sage shown at PF. The sage I'm used to was use by the Navajos and grew on a mountain and a diffrent leaf form. I'm sure each region has it's own variety that was used for this purpose.

I heard culnary sage doesn't work.

Smoking is bad for you.

Dallas, TX

I have never drank out my Dave's cup. It was on a shelf.
Gymgirl, where is the voting booth?
Don't worry Tom I am not smoking anything I never smoked before. I just learned a lot ... did not know it was a Salvia.

Dallas, TX

Josephine, I would love some of your salvia greggii . You can save it for me until there is another RU. I would love it. Thanks!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

O.K. Sylvia, it is going to be a while before I trim them again since I just not too long ago cut them back, but I will save the cuttings when I do it.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sylvia...the voting booth is on the home page normally.

Dallas, TX

Thanks Josephine! I just saw the voting booth when I updated my vendor info. LOL it was funny, everyone thoughts about the cup, someone wanted to know if it had a hole in the bottom!:) I never noticed it looked like a flower pot. I dont think I ever drank out of it.

I goes through the dishwasher great, I have three left (gave one as gift) and they have really been sturdy...had those for five years now.

Sylvia,

Since you first asked, I've been pondering whether or not I should post this here. So I've decide to do it now; before this thread gets too long.

The place I get wiccan supplies from is called Capricorns Lair. If you care to get more smudge sticks look on this page: http://www.capricornslair.com/sweetgrasssmudgesagewands.aspx

That should help you. I don't know if your friend "charged it" for the use of it. But when you get the smudge sticks you must "charge" them with "positive energy" for their use.

"Hold it/them in your dominate hand and think of what you want them to bring: ie: Luck, Money, Happiness, Clearing bad energy or negative energy, etc." Don't doubt or second guess when you are doing this.... Your thoughts are to remain completely positive for it/them to be "charged" with the positive energy. If you feel bad or negative, don't "charge" them ... rather let your friend do it for you. Some people can "charge" them, some people can't. Some of them come "charged" when you buy them ... it's important to ask before purchasing them. HTH

~ Robin
