Farmers Almanac

Grandview, TX(Zone 8a)

Who uses one?
I've heard many people swear by them. I finally got one and been looking through it. There is so much info in that little book!!
Which part/parts do you swear by and why?

I love reading thru the Old Farmers Almanac. I can't honestly say I use it for more than entertainment. Many older folks use it for the planting information.

Many in this area plant by the moon and there are some on DG that Garden by the Moon. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/lunarmania/all/

It is interesting to me but I plant mostly by "the spare time".

Which part/parts of the almanac caught your attention?

The weather and planting times were interesting to me. My Grandfather (Papa) always planted his garden by the FA, but at that time I was to young to really grasp it. His gardens (fruits and vegies) always produced very well.
I have heard many people come in to my work talking about the FA and they swear by the castration times. (I work in veterinary medicine.) The large animal clients will only castrate at certain times the FA says it's ok to do so.
Some of it lost me with the back and forth between pages. :/

I would guess the castration times would be tied to the moon also.

I know haircuts will grow back slower or faster depending on the phase of the moon it is cut in.

The moon is known by gravediggers also. Some times of the moon, they will have plenty of dirt left over and other times, not enough to fill in the grave.

I need to go pick up a 2011 Almanac. I have one for every year since we moved to the country in 1975.

I do gardening by the "Moon". My harvest was 45% higher last year due to this kind of gardening.
Actually is a lot of fun.
I follow this book:
The North American Biodynamic Sowing and Planting Calendar 2011
http://www.amazon.com/American-Biodynamic-Sowing-Planting-Calendar/dp/0863157564/ref=wl_mb_hu_c_T2_3_dp
It is amazing and very easy (even if more advanced than the Farmers Almanac)
I really suggest you try it.

I do not plant a seed or transplant a plant that I am serious about if the moon and signs are not right. And sometimes this can be a headache! I used the almanac for years until I discovered http://www.gardeningbythemoon.com/. I love her calendars.
