Looking for Jing Orange Okra Seeds

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

Does anyone have a source or have a few you would be willing to sell? Baker Creek is out of stock. Unfortunately I'm new at this so I don't really have anything to trade. I did order the Louisiana Long Green Okra and Louisiana Long Green Eggplant seeds so if someone wanted a few of those, we could swap. I only want to grow 1 to 3 plants.

I found them for you at Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and you can google for other companies. What is the difference as I grow all kinds of okra but never that one. Please respond?

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

I want to grow Jing Orange, too! If i find another source I will post it here. This is the first I have heard of this variety so all I know is what I read on the Baker Creek Heirloom catalog- it was described as a new variety from Asia, with very bright stems and pods. Looks fantastic!

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

I don't know much about it either other than what I saw in the Baker Creek catalog. It sure looks interesting though. If the color really is that bright it would be beautiful. I've googled and binged and googled and binged since last week with no results except for someone in the UK. I emailed him and he is out of stock also. I checked ebay too.

None of the big Asian companies, Chia Tai (Thailand) Green Seeds (Vietnam) All Lucky (China) EverGrow (China) Beijin Mantian (China) Mahyco (India) list it so I have no idea where it came from. Known You (Taiwan) has a red variety call Carmine.

There are lots of seed sites listing them... whether they actually stock them is the $24.00 question.

Look thru this seed search.

Nice long list that boils down to three vendors; Baker Creek, Sustainable (which actually does not carry it) and a 2008 SSE year book listing. Apparently it is a heirloom that has been around in North America for a while.

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

I checked Sustainable before and nope, they don't have it. Elusive little bugger.

What a great catalog!!! I don't see "Jing" but I see a bunch of other stuff I'd love to have. Thanks!

Hutto, TX(Zone 8b)

Liza, be sure to check the Garden Watchdog entry for Reimer Seeds before you spend too much money with them:

Rats. But it's probably the universe's way of telling me to STOP. I've gone seed crazy as it is. Would still like to find the Jing though.

David,

Thanks for the heads up about Reimer Seeds. Read some of the comments on garden watch dog. I won't be ordering from Reimer. I refuse to deal with a company that only has a PO Box, and I would never deal with anyone who does not post a phone number.

LizaMouse,

I found you a link with another gardener who may have stashed some Jing Orange seeds. http://myfolia.com/plants/416-okra-abelmoschus-esculentus/varieties/130430-jing-orange/stashed

Thanks Sonny. I'll have to sign up and contact her. I checked Baker Creek again. Still out of stock.

I wish my Burpee order would hurry up and get here. They seem a bit s-l-o-w. The "Louisiana long green eggplant" and "Louisiana long green okra" (don't know what it is about Louisiana and long green things) that I ordered from Baker were here in a flash. They're already planted in their starter pots. I have extra if someone wants to try them.

LizaMouse,

Hope you are succesfull in your quest for the jing.

I still have a month or so until I start plants indoors. I need to figure my new garden layout so I don't get overly ambitious. What was once air is now a 10'X24' terraced garden bed. It will be interesting to see how the soil I mixed does with veggies.

That sounds wonderful Sonny. Good luck with your new garden!

silver spring, MD(Zone 7a)

Have you tried here, they say they have them http://www.sandhillpreservation.com/catalog/okra.html? Good luck!

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

Thanks yehudith! I'm going to mail in an order tomorrow!

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I mailed my order in few weeks ago..still waiting for them to mail it back to me..wondered if they are sending me any..I asked for 3 packages..lol..along with green color cotton seeds..

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Moodene,
who are you talking about not sending you the seeds?
Baker Creek or Sandhill?

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

Well I figure that's it's less than $5 so if the seeds don't come for some reason, I haven't lost much.

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

SandHill..I ordered them but haven't gotten anything in the mail from them yet..lol..still waiting like a kid for ice ceam..lol..

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

When I found that Baker's Creek was sold out of the seeds, I went into a searching mode to find me some and Sand Hill had them on their website so I ordered me some..lol..

Hutto, TX(Zone 8b)

I know they only answer e-mail once or twice a week--but has anyone e-mailed to ask if they really have it and what sort of shipping time one might expect?

David

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

I didn't bother. Think of it as sort of an okra slot machine.

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I will let ya'll know when I get mine or not..lol..

Glenwood Springs, CO(Zone 5b)

Moodene,

Thanks for the tip on Baker Creek! I know where my seeds are coming from this year!

I have just received the "Okra Jing Orange" seeds from Sandhill.
I have sent a check and right away my order arrived. The package has lots of seeds.
They also send me an extra Okra package as a gift.
I will definetly order from them again ... even if they don't have email.

Hutto, TX(Zone 8b)

DrThor,

When did you order your okra seeds? I ordered some almost two weeks ago. If they get here in the next few weeks it will be in time to plant. You are right that good product is more important than instant service.

David

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

About 2 weeks ago ... I think ...

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I am still waiting for mine and I paid mine with a money order..I will have to call n check on mine..I have my MO stub number..

Hutto, TX(Zone 8b)

I just looked at my online bank. The check I wrote to Sandhill a little over two weeks ago just cleared the bank today. I would guess that means that I will get the okra seeds in a week or so. They are being mailed by ground (snail mail) so delivery is not that fast. (I'm a little spoiled by Amazon.com. I bought a "prime" membership and everything ships by 2nd-day express.)

David

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I am a happy camper!! Got 3 pkgs of this okra seed..Yahoo!!...along with my Emerald Green Cotton seeds...

Hutto, TX(Zone 8b)

My Orange Jing seeds arrived today, too. Pretty good delivery for a paper-based and hand processed delivery! I was pleased that the package included two different free seed types. I ordered several tomatoes and a squash besides the okra. Off to Garden Watchdog for a positive review.

David

(Nadine) Devers, TX(Zone 9b)

I lefted a positive review as well..now after next week I will be soaking these puppies and planting them in homemade paper pots. I know Okra doesnt take transplanting too well but by leaving them in paperpots, you can plant the pot n seedlings all into the soil..lol...my daddy and I will be making about 45 pots about the size of tall tin can.
