Roma beans problem last year

Georgetown, IN(Zone 6b)

I grow Roma beans that we can....family loves them. Have grown them last 15 years or so with pretty good sucess, although have to replant occasionally because do got full stand in a row.

Last year was awful, re-planted several times with very little sucess.

Curious about others experience with this variety and any tips

Thanks

Hi Phil --- Could it be your soil is just plain worn out? Try mixing a couple bags of a premium container mix into the soil but don't buy top soil as it just gets hard and will have poor drainage. What do you think?

Thanks Tplant, that may be something to consider. I was wondering if it could be a soil issue.

Most of my other crops do OK, other than fighting the blight each year with tomatoes.

Common beans are not very demanding. I would suspect that you have a build- up of soil disease . Since you are having difficulty getting a stand I would suspect one of the root rots; Fusarium, Pythium, Rhizoctonia. http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/dg6144.html

Good to see you posting Plant. Have not seen you for awhile.

Thanks Farmer! I've been kind of down and out of hospitals for months but have to cut back on my work. No lifting. Meanwhile you do think Phil has a soil problem? That is difficult to put up with unless he makes a raised gardn?
