another seedpod question

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

I have brought my babies in. :( It's going to be nice the rest of the week, but too much trouble to take them back out now! I have several that have seed pods on them. Should I keep these in bright light and feed? If I let them go dormant, will the seeds ripen. These are all baby seed pods, and some I just pollinated in the past two weeks, so I'm not sure they will make, but don't want to take a chance.

tiG,
my Brugs go in the greenhouse and if I have seed pods on them I keep watering and feeding them until the pod ripens....I would think they would need the water and food to develope the seed pod and keep it alive.

thanks, that's what I was thinking but needed your input:)

How long after the flower falls off can you see the pod? And how long does it take for the pod to ripen? After my brugs got throughly 'done' by the hummingbird moths the other night, I've been hoping for seeds. The weatherman says I've got at least till next weekend before threat of frost again, so they're still outside. How long should I wait?

You know I have never noticed how long it takes for a pod to form...I do know it takes at least anywhere from 3-8 months for them to be ready. If you think your pod is fertile I'd bring it out of the frost..if possible.

I did have a pod once on a Brug that was in the ground and was almost ready to pick but the weather was turning frosty that night so I wrapped the whole burg with a moving pad...as you can see I will do anything for my Brugs. LOL

My Jutner Orange has two seed pods that are about 4 inches long. The plants are in the ground and I'm waiting as long as I can before I cut the stems. I hope it's a few more weeks before we get a freeze. We've had a couple of light frosts, but these are right up against the house. Wonder how long before they are ripe?

about 4 months. MsBatt, after your flower dies, the flower will fall out of the calyx. In just a couple of days, your calyx will either turn yellow or not. If it stays green, you've probably got a pod. you won't be able to see it for a while:) But if the calyx turns yellow, you might as well snap it off.
(notes only viewed as by what's going on with my plants, subject to someone who really knows what they are talking about coming in here and slapping my hand:)

Tig
That seems right. I've noticed that the ones where the calyx turns yellow don't make a seed pod, and if one forms it falls off later.

the only reason I mentioned it is because that's the first sign, and since they aren't like garden flowers where most produce seed, it's just something I check out as often as I look at my flowers:)

Good luck with all of your seed pods. My most valuable seedpods are just now being set on Brugs in the ground. I won't try anymore this year though. Take cuttings at the first sign of frost and water root inside. If rot starts to flow up from the bottom-have enough extra stem to cut the rot well away from the seedpod and plant directly in good aerated potting soil and remove most all leaves. I am moving a few Culebra's, Butterfly, Citronella, and others in the greenhouse for earlier pollination attempts next summer. Ahh, All of Glory's hybrids are in large pots as well being moved back and forth,... most impressive Glory.

I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to do with all my seeds if they really do make it!! I have 3 trays right now of seeds going, plus about 20 arborea babies. I may just keep any seeds mine set until spring and hope it isn't too late. I value the seeds I've gotten from Eric and valleygrow more than mine! oh and the aureas from ethnobotanical. We went out the other night and got extra grow lights just for my brug babies.

Tig,
The Aurea's are my favorite as well. Just 3 seedtrays though? Why not 3 tables full? You can always select the leaf types you like and discard the rest that way.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

okay, send some my way and I'll grow them ;) LOL!!! I had to buy the aureas and at $3 for 10 seeds, I started small.

FSH, TX

Not bad Tig, you have to remember aurea seed pods don't have as many seeds as a versicolor seedpod much less a suaveolens. I would consider that very inexpensive.

oh, good then:) LOL~~
