Has anyone grown peas in pots?

Many of you are aware that Julie and I have limited sunny areas. We love to grow enough peas to eat as we walk the gardens but haven't been very successful in growing them yet. We are now wondering if we should maybe try them in large plastic pots like we do tomatoes, even using a tomato cage for them to climb on. Has enyone tried something like this?

Hi Sharon, don't know why it wouldn't work. I have even grown corn in 5 gallon buckets. Actually got 3 ears per plant. Sometimes you have to do things like that to get sun.

I'm of the opinion that nearly anything can be grown in containers. I did grow sugarsnaps in a container a couple years ago, though, and it was not my most successful experiment. But I believe that was largely because I was unable to adequately control the exposure to very hot baking sun! (This was in a very different climate to here, of course.) Anyway, my failure was still only partial and had nothing to do with the plant being container grown.

I used to have a bookmarked website about container veggies, but have it no longer. However it would be pretty easy to find with google. Google is one of my main gardening tools, LOL!

good luck, I think it should work just fine!

I have grown peas in 5 gal pots. They do fine. If the pot is a dark color I wrap it or spray paint it a lighter color so the roots don't heat up too much. Works great here in Portland.

I think that we are convinced that we are going to try it. After all, the harvest couldn't be much worse than last years was! I also like the thought of having better control over the slugs that seem to decimate my pea babies in the garden I have been currently using. Thanks for the input!

I grew sugar snap pea's in a pot and a hanging basket last year. They both did very well. Hope this helps.

Last year I grew peas in a container. I used an 18-20" pot and my deck railing as a trellis. It did great but the peas kept trying to danging off the deck instead of climbing it.

I have grown just about every veggie you can mention in 1/2 wooden barrows.
This year I want to try some of the hanging stuff.
