CLOSED: Brazoria NWR Unknown Owl (I think)

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

I finished processing all of my photos from Friday and still have a few that I either outright don't have a clue on ID or have a clue, but not a warm fuzzy. :O)

They were all shot on 21 Jan 2011 in the morning at Brazoria Nat'l Wildlife Refuge (Texas Gulf Coast roughly 60 miles SW of Houston).

This is the only photo I got of this bird and it is pretty bad. I think it is some type of owl. It was rather large and flew behind a stand of trees and heavy undergrowth, so I only saw it for a few seconds. I thought it was a hawk, but the photo looks more like an owl to me.

Northern Harrier, female or juvenile. They do have owl-like faces.

Eeeeek. I was way off on this one. I also saw and photographed several N. Harriers out there. This bird seemed to be too "chunky" to be a Harrier, but I didn't see it for long, so probably right.

Thanks much Resin! You are amazing to be able to ID these birds from shots as bad as this one. The more experience I get, the easier it is for me to key in on little features. I don't think I'll live long enough to develop your skill at this.LOL.
